Councilman Tony Avella along with 14 other City Council members voted in favor of naming a street after racist Sonny Carson. Mr. Carson proclaimed himself as anti-white, an anti-Semite and was a convicted felon. He led racially charged boycotts and protests causing divisiveness and violence in many neighborhoods.
Here are just a few of Mr. Carson’s discordant and racist remarks:
In 1990, Carson led a boycott campaign against Korean-owned delis in Brooklyn's black neighborhoods, marching with signs that read, "Don't shop with people who don't look like us." Carson said at the time, “In the future, there'll be funerals, not boycotts.”
In 1991, he applauded the Crown Heights mob that killed Hasidic student Yankel Rosenbaum, stating that he was "very proud" of what had happened. However, when accused of anti-Semitism, he replied, "I'm anti-white - don't limit my anti's to one group of people."
Individuals such as Sonny Carson do not deserve governmental recognition or to be honored by any city. Doing so would denigrate those deserving of our esteem and make all street re-namings a mockery.
What is even more disheartening is that the vote was cast along ethnic lines. Doing what is right should not be compromised by racial differences and bigotry. But if you are Councilman Avella you do what is politically expedient for Tony and forget about what is right. His vote yesterday was political pandering at its highest level. Tony wants to run for Mayor and he knows he desperately needs the minority vote to have a chance at winning. Therefore, he decided it was in his best interest, not the interests of his constituents to vote to have a street renamed for a racist. Mr. Avella fails to realize however, that voters of all races can see through his political smoke and mirrors.
Thankfully, a majority of the City Council voted against the proposal and saved the city and its residents from having their streets renamed for hatred.

Tony Avella the Political phony finally exposed. He will sell out his mom for a vote. What a disgrace.
I voted for Tony admired him for his vote against the pay raise, but in my mind he is the worst excuse for an elected official. He is elected to represent us not to vote to advance his own political career.
Tony Avella is a fake and a fraud, he has no moral compass. He will do anything say anything and betray anyone to advance himself.
As a voting member of Tony's district in College Point, we always knew he was shady look at the College Point Sports Association where Tony filled our fields with Toxic waste
This is a outrage we should protest Tony's office.
We should also protest the JPCA for putting this guy foward. Politics makes strange bedfellows.
This is the type of man that Bob Holden wants to be our Mayor? This is the guy Holden wants to promote. Tony Avella is a poor excuse for an elected official and now we can see he does not have the backbone to stand up to Charles Barron and the other extremist in the City.
Tony Avella a sell out.
You should check his voting record on Immigration issues; he lets us down in that area too.
This is what is so wrong about the leadership of the Juniper Park Civic Association, we the membership never had a chance to vote on whether Tony Avella should have been honored.
Anyone can see he is a shameless self promoter who comes into Maspeth rants and leaves without accomplishing a thing. This is not Leadership it is an example of a Political man who will do anything to advance himself.
What did he do for the Elmhurst Gas Tank Site?
What did he do for St. Saviors besides rant?
What has he done as the Chair of a City Council Committee to curb Overdevelopment?
What funding has he assisted in delivering for our community or Queens as a whole?
Plain and simple Tony Avella is honored by Bob Holden because of Mayoral Politics.
I am in favor of more responsible leadership that is willing to tell people “No”, even when pressured by a Civic Leader. A once proud civic has become a Political organization that’s why no one shows up at the meetings anymore.
Patrick Henry >>> what about John Liu's vote that’s even more insulting. He represents a sizable Korean Population. He has clearly let them down.
I am not the biggest fan of Speaker Quinn's politics but she deserves credit for standing up for what’s right. She earned my consideration for a vote if she chooses to go for higher office
I guess when this info comes out no Bob Holden for Parks Commissioner because Tony will never get elected.
God Help us Bob Holden for Parks Commissioner.
No Dogs
No Concerts
No Community Day
No Vietnam Vets Memorial
No Local Kids allowed to play ball
Please God never
Does that mean that Steve the Grassman would be his deputy in charge of "grass maintenance"
I would have been much happier if Tony stayed home in his pool rather than taking this vote.
Tony Avella is nothing more than a devious opportunist who will stop at nothing to advance his dismal career. He travels outside his district masquerading as the champion of the little man. However, the people of New York see through his charade and know he is the worst politics has to offer. No wonder him and Bob get along, they might have been seperated at birth. Scumese twins
This isn't the first time Tony voted against his community check how he votes on Immigration bills with Domestic Partners. He is an embarrassment to Catholic Italian Americans
How come Tony is so quiet about the Assassination comments from his Black Panther Friends?
Tony in your attempt to curry favor with the radical militant extremist, you have lost the respect of the Middle Class taxpayers, the ones who will decide the elections.
Tony Avella Sold Out ..... Taxpayers will get the revenge they deserve.
The only person right now who is happy is Senator Frank Padavan he just secured the GOP majority. Avella is such an idiot
Sonny Carson a hero? This anti white, anti Jew race baiting Felon a hero? We should honor his hatred and bigotry forever by placing a street sign in his honor? You are crazy Councilman Avella I will tell you what I really feel when I see you at the next JPCA meeting. I would write it here but I am too much of a Lady.
Let’s see how smart Tony Avella is:
Alienate all middle class white voters who are moderate to conservative to try to get the vote of extremist who hate whites?
Do you think this helped Tony?
Maybe he has been taking Tulips advice.
Tony Avella is what is wrong about New York Politics. He was corrupt when he was the head of the little league and he is sham of an elected official. I am thrilled that this site speaks the truth.
Why didn't the Crapper take the shot at Tony Avella ... because they are in bed with him that’s why! This fact shows that the Crap site has no credibility.
Tony Avella and Tulips are perfect together: Lowlife egomaniacs.
The Patriots should do a post on Leroy Comorie he is a great example of what an elected official should be. He is honest, hardworking and fair and open-minded. He realizes that Queens is diverse and never makes a decision in haste. He is everything Tony Avella is not.
Tony learn from Leroy about governing and stop playing politcs.
You know what amazes me is the Crap gives this guy a free ride. Overdevelopment in Avella's district is worse then most places in the city. While the Crap maligns all other elected officials Tony is only a hero to them.
Maybe he and Bob Holden have a financial arrangement. Like Bob had with other elected officials he brought off.
hey what is tony the tuplip going to do when bob gets indicted for cooking his books
patrick henry keep up the good work .Maybe someone in the press will realize what bob holden is about
Do you know why Avella and Holden get along so well together? They both have anger problems. Only Tony to his credit does not bring his anger home.
Hey Avella should be the guy with the nick name Pinky.
Hey Ben Tulip has enough to worry about. He already aided criminals once before. Tulips Little one used two lips well and often
I remember the day Tony took that vote, he actually got his advice to support Barron from Tom weiss who has a blog at tomsupfrontnews.blogspot.com I think Tony is a brave politician recently he spoke out against the olympics in Beijing, just a day before the Tibet riots. It was covered in the major press. Anyone who takes on the Chinese is very brave.
