Famous Queens Resident Series, Part XXXII

KISS - The theatrical rock foursome that took the world by storm in the 1970s played their first gig at the Coventry Club on Queens Boulevard in 1973. Lead singer/guitarist Paul Stanley (b. Paul Elisen) grew up in Flushing and Bass player Gene Simmons (b. Chiam Whitz) practiced his licks in Jackson Heights.

Kiss is an American rock band formed in New York City in 1973. Easily identified by their trademark face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid-1970s on the basis of their elaborate live performances, which featured fire-breathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, and pyrotechnics. Kiss has been awarded 24 gold albums to date. The group's worldwide sales exceed 95 million albums.

The original lineup of Gene Simmons (bass and vocals), Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar and vocals), Ace Frehley (lead guitar and vocals) and Peter Criss (drums and vocals) is the most successful and identifiable. With their makeup and costumes, they took on the personae of comic book-style characters: the Demon (Simmons), the Star Child (Stanley), the Space Man (Frehley), and the Cat Man (Criss). Due to creative differences, both Criss and Frehley were out of the group by 1982. The band's commercial fortunes had also waned considerably by that point.

In 1983, Kiss abandoned their makeup and enjoyed a commercial resurgence throughout the rest of the decade. Buoyed by a wave of Kiss nostalgia in the 1990s, the band announced a reunion of the original lineup (with makeup) in 1996. The resulting Kiss Alive/Worldwide Tour was the top-grossing act of 1996. Criss and Frehley have since left Kiss again and have been replaced by Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, respectively. The band continues to perform, while Stanley and Simmons have remained the only two constant members.

Robert Holden Obstructing Justice?

Reliable sources state that when detectives from 104th precinct arrested Midville Dodger coach, Anthony Macchirule for assault, they were immediately contacted by an irate Holden.

The assault was a violent response to a close and over zealous play at the plate prompting the coach to physically attack a young ballplayer.

Insiders tell the Patriots that Robert Holden personally went to 104th precinct to have the charges dropped! Apparently, Bob has unrestricted access to the local precinct and its commander, Captain Green. Not surprisingly, Bob Holden was trying to persuade law enforcement from making the arrest and letting the violent offender go free! The Patriots are appalled that Holden is given this unique privilege and are deeply disturbed that Holden cares more for saving the reputation of his corrupt baseball league than the safety of the players.

Captain Green should be more concerned with the entire community and not be worried that he will be crucified in the next issue of the Juniper Berry.

Just another example of why Robert Holden is a detriment and danger to our community.

Robert Holden Attacks Own Legal Counsel?

It seems that Robert Holden is spending a lot of time and energy attacking his own legal counsel lately. But then again, who hasn’t Bob attacked.

It is no secret that the Forum West is the bastard love child of the Juniper Berry and Mein Kampf. So it was a bit confusing when the Forum Crap did a full page article on Anthony Como’s home construction and how it violates every Department of Buildings and zoning regulation known to man. How can Bob Holden preach the evils of over development to the masses while his own legal counsel is over-developing his own home!

As stated above, in the last issue of the Forum Crap, they did a full page article on the abomination that exists at 64-46 82nd Place (Como’s house of horrors) and then this week in the Forum Crap the home made the “Community Eyesore of the Week”.

Here is the excerpt from page 19:

With little progress on the three-story house at 64-46 82nd Place (corner 64th Road) since work was stopped in March, neighbors say that are tired of living near the construction site eyesore. Thirteen complaints have been filed with the DOB regarding this project, including work that started too early in the morning, debris blocking on-street parking spaces, the building being too high for the zone, workers on the roof despite a stop work order and foundations expanded beyond what is permitted. The house’s owner, Anthony Como, and is a former assistant district attorney, counsel to Senator Serphin Maltese and a commissioner of the Board of Elections.

The article failed to mention that Mr. Como is also listed as legal counsel to the Juniper Park Civic Association.

We at the Patriots do not see anything wrong with Mr. Como renovating his one family home to provide a better dwelling for his family. However, we do have problem with Robert Holden spewing his anti-development rhetoric and attacking everyone who picks up a hammer, yet he fails to ensure that members of his own organization follow the All Mighty Holden Building Code.

At the end of the day, Robert Holden can illegally convert his basement and refuse to allow building inspectors access. His legal counsel can build a huge house and remain a member of the Juniper Park Civic Association’s Board. Yet the rest of the world is crucified for similar acts against humanity.

Aaah the hypocrisy!

A Poem: by Edward (Pampers) Kamperman

I was shocked and moved to tears by a recent poem recitation by the drunken poet laureate, Edward (Pampers) Kamperman.

Although his insight to the human condition is flawed, his understanding of philosophy limited to fortune cookies and his stage presence similar to that of a pet rock, his poem has touched our hearts.

THINK that I shall never see
A drunk as silly as me.

Me whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the Zums sweet flowing crest;

Me that looks at God all day,
And viciously attacks instead of to pray;

Me that may in a drunk stuper wear
A nest of robins in his hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately hits on women without blame.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can forgive an idiot like Me.

Holden Facilitates Carnage for Parsonage

The poor little parsonage has been demolished by the wrecking crew thanks to Robert Holden and the Juniper Park Civic Association's executive board. Neighbors looked in horror as the building was torn down in a matter of minutes and they have no else to blame but Holden himself.

Self-righteous Holden and his band of merry misfits crushed any possibility of saving the parsonage or the church because of their "my way or the high way" approach to civic involvement. The developers was pushed into a corner by the narrow-minded self-proclaimed protectors of the peace and fought his way out by withdrawing the re-zoning application setting the stage for the demolition of the St. Saviour's buildings. Let us correctly place the blame on those individuals responsible. We should absolve the developer and condemn Robert Holden, Tony Nuziato, Tony Avella, Christina Wilkinson, Ed Kamperman and Paul Ditta for their complicity in this community loss.

It is a crying shame that these individuals filled with hubris and prejudices are allowed to slowly destroy our community.

Weprin Puts the "who" in Media Whore

Once again Weprin's compulsion to have his picture taken has landed him in hot water. Recently, Delusional David rushed to the side of the Rev. Jesse Jackson to have his photo taken despite the history of the controversial leader.

The Patriots find it very odd (but not out of character) that Weprin, a self-described modern Orthodox Jew, would appear in a photo with a man who is still detested in some Jewish circles for referring in 1984 to Jews as "Hymies" and the city as "Hymietown".

We know poor Weprin can't help himself. He would take a picture with the Son of Sam if he thought it would get him the NRA vote.

Famous Queens Resident Series, Part XXXI

Boss Tweed - The “Boss” of Tammany Hall once lived in Bayside

William M. "Boss" Tweed (April 3, 1823 – April 12, 1878) was an American criminal, who was convicted and imprisoned for stealing millions of dollars from New York City through political corruption. Tweed was a politician and head of Tammany Hall, the name given to the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in the history of 19th century politics. He was of Scottish-Irish descent.

Tweed's middle name does not appear on any surviving documents. Tweed invariably gave his name as "William M. Tweed" on the many government orders he signed. The M. probably stands for Magear, the middle name of his son William Magear Tweed Jr, since a son named Junior has the same name as his father. Magear was Tweed's mother's maiden name. The often used but incorrect middle name Marcy originated in a joking reference to New York Governor William L. Marcy (1833–1838), the man who said "to the victor belongs the spoils".

Tweed had started his ascent as a volunteer fireman, which, in 1840s New York City, was often considered the first stepping stone into New York City politics. Tweed himself was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1852, the New York City Board of Advisors in 1856, and the New York State Senate in 1867.
Financiers Jay Gould and Big Jim Fisk made Boss Tweed a director of the Erie Railroad, and Tweed in turn arranged favorable legislation for them. Tweed and Gould became the subjects of political cartoons by Thomas Nast in 1869.

In April 1870 Tweed secured the passage of a city charter putting the control of the city into the hands of the mayor (A. Oakey Hall), the comptroller, and the commissioners of parks and public works. He then set about to plunder the city. The total amount of money stolen was never known, but has been estimated from $75 million to $200 million. Over a period of two years and eight months, New York City's debts increased from $36 million in 1868 to about $136 million by 1870, with little costs or expenditures to show for the debt.

Tweed was accused of defrauding the city by having contractors present excessive bills for work performed—typically ranging from 15 to 65 percent more than the project actually cost. The opposition was strengthening. This extra money was propagandized against Tweed and stated as having been divided among Tweed, his subordinates and his cronies. The most excessive overcharging came in the form of the famous Tweed Courthouse, which cost the city $13 million to construct (the actual cost for the courthouse was about $3 million), leaving about $10 million for the pockets of Tweed and his gang. The city was also billed $3 million for city printing and stationery over a two-year period.

While he was known primarily for the vast corrupt empire, Tweed was also responsible for building hospitals and orphanages, widening Broadway along the Upper West Side, and securing the land for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Tweed's demise came when one of the plunderers, dissatisfied with the amount he received, gave The New York Times evidence that conclusively proved that stealing was going on. The newspaper was reportedly offered $5 million to not publish the evidence. In a subsequent interview about the fraud, Tweed's only reply was, "Well, what are you going to do about it?" However, accounts in The New York Times and political cartoons drawn by Thomas Nast and published in Harper's Weekly resulted in the election of numerous opposition candidates in 1871. Tweed is attributed with exclaiming, "Stop them damned pictures. I don't care so much what the papers say about me. My constituents can't read, but, darn it, they can see pictures!"
In October 1871, when Tweed was held on $8 million bail, Boss Tweed was the chief bondsman. The efforts of political reformers William H. Wickham (1875 New York City mayor) and Samuel J. Tilden (later the 1876 Democratic presidential nominee) resulted in Tweed's trial and conviction in 1873. He was given a 12-year prison sentence, which was reduced by a higher court and he served one year. He was then re-arrested on civil charges, sued by New York State for $6 million and held in debtor's prison until he could post $3 million as bail. On January 3, 1875, Tweed escaped and fled to Cuba.

His presence in Cuba was discovered by the U.S. government, and he was held by the Cuban government. Before the U.S. government could arrange for his extradition, Tweed bribed his way onto a ship to Spain. Before he arrived, the U.S. government discovered his eventual destination and arranged for his arrest as soon as he reached the Spanish coast. The Spanish authorities identified him, purportedly recognizing him from one of Nast's cartoons, and extradited him; he was delivered to authorities in New York City on November 23, 1876, where he died in the Ludlow Street Jail, just a few blocks from his childhood home, two years later on April 12, 1878, at the age of 55. He was buried in the Brooklyn Green-Wood Cemetery.

In studies of Tweed and the Tammany Hall machine, almost all histories and textbooks have condemned the corruption, graft, and conspiratorial nature of "Boss Tweed". History books in American schools have often also pointed out how he was exposed by cartoonist Thomas Nast and ended his days in Ludlow Street Jail. Exposers of machine corruption, like the Muckraker Lincoln Steffens, may speak of supporters of a machine as innocent or ignorant victims, but those voters expected and demanded rewards for their votes such as help in dealing with employers or landlords, finding jobs, or surviving periods of illness or unemployment[citation needed]. Thus, it was the rise of the social welfare concept of government that did the most to weaken machine politics[citation needed].

• Boss Tweed was portrayed by Jim Broadbent in the 2002 film Gangs of New York.

• Tweed, portrayed as villainous and vindictive, was mentioned in chapter 14 of Neal Shusterman's young adult novel Downsiders.

• In the Elseworlds miniseries Green Lantern: Evil's Might, Tweed and Tammany Hall are featured as two of the main villains. This depiction of Tweed even goes as far as to mention Thomas Nast's political cartoons.

• In the 1977 science-fiction novel "The Ophiuchi Hotline" by John Varley, a crooked politician in the human-settled Moon of the 27th century takes up the name "Boss Tweed" in deliberate emulation of the 19th Century politician, and even names his Lunar headquarters "Tammany Hall".

• The role of Boss Tweed was originated by Noah Beery, Sr. in the 1945 original Broadway production of "Up In Central Park".

• Tweed has a cameo appearance of sorts in the novel Inferno by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. In Bolgia 5 of the Malebolge, demons are seen pulling Tweed out of the lake of boiling pitch and torturing him.

Bring Back Curtis and Kuby

The radio fossils in stale suits who meet in stuffy conference rooms decided to bring Don Imus back to the radio. In their limited wisdom, they hope that the idiot will bring huge ratings to WABC but it is only a matter of time before Imus puts his head up his anus again.

We at the Patriots don’t know what is more offensive, Imus calling the Rutgers women’s basketball team a bunch of “nappy headed ho’s” or trying to disguise his racial ignorance by hiring two African Americans. That’s almost as ridiculous as a racist defending himself by stating he had a black friend in high school.

Curtis and Kuby were New York City radio. They spoke about issues that New Yorkers were concerned with. Don Imus just pontificates about national issues and is no different than the other talking heads that inundate the airwaves.

New York City will miss Curtis and Kuby.

Let's stop giving murderers the publicity they'd kill for

Stanley Crouch of the NY Daily News supports the Patriots claim that the television news media parasites are facilitating mass murders.

Please read his article below.

Monday, December 10th 2007, 4:00 AM

As the carnival of unexpected murder and violence continues to appear as though it is a series of specials on television news, heads of media organizations might consider changing the coverage of mass murders. Do we actually need to know or learn much more about "the mind of a killer" or what happened in his early life?

I think not. I agree with the relative of one of the people killed in the Columbine shootings who said that too much attention is given to the killers and not enough to the people who are killed.

The Virginia Tech loon who sent photographs and videotapes of himself to NBC clearly planned to blast his way into fame. He wanted to be remembered and thought all of this out before cutting himself down at the end of his meaningless hill of murders. Actually, for him, the killings had a big meaning: making a very sick man part of the celebrity culture in which we find ourselves trapped. If you don't have talent, well, you can kill. That will bring the cameras and the discussion.

Last week, a gunman killed eight people before committing suicide in an Omaha shopping mall. "Now I will be famous," the killer wrote in a suicide note, his landlady told CNN.

All of us have seen too many of these media profiles of killers as though they are actually interesting or mysteriously ominous characters. They aren't. Having known far more criminals over my life than I have needed to, I have learned that they are dull. And when they are not dull they suffer from the worst extreme of arrested development.

Meaning what?

Changing children from small narcissistic animals is difficult but simple. It comes down to teaching them the meaning and importance of compassion and empathy. The world is not here to respond to you, and torturing others hurts them - even if the venting of your anger provides a momentary feeling of release and justification.

Unlike criminals and mass murderers, children develop into human beings when they learn that others do not enjoy the pain that they have caused them anymore than the children themselves would. Simple, but profound. One of the reasons children learn this is guilt.

These very simple and basic things do not communicate as well as they might in our ongoing "me generation," as Tom Wolfe rightly called it more than 20 years ago. Wolfe probably thought that he had recognized what was no more than a passing trend of overheated narcissism. If so, he was wrong.

Perhaps the most threatening individual version of this overheated narcissism is the mass murderer. He is the man lost or hidden by the crowd, but he will not put up with it any longer. He has decided that his unhappiness is more important in its pain than the lives of anonymous others.

But, most of all, killing as many as possible will draw him the attention he never got and people will, perhaps, come to "understand" the depth of his anger or how much his failure meant as it transformed itself into the acid of absolute hostility within his mortal coil.

All of this adds up to a considerable challenge for the media, but not one beyond its capability. If the media had the courage and developed the narrative skills to make the lives of the victims more important and more compelling in their humanity than the crabbed and tortured lives of their murderers, the attention would give the killers far less space than the victims.

Imagine if it saved lives beyond the killer himself. He might then only do away with one person. We would then be spared the body bags filled with those whom he had planned to sacrifice on the altar of television.

Remember Pearl Harbor

Let us take a moment to recognize the bravery and heroism of the American servicemen and women who fought and died on December 7, 1941.

Please see below an excerpt we found on www.rememberingpearlharbor.org

It states perfectly why we should always remember.

It has been 66 years since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, marking the entrance of the United States into World War II. It remains our moral duty to those who died and served to remember what happened on that Sunday morning 66 years ago.

In doing so, we also remember all the servicemen and servicewomen plus the millions of innocent non-combatants who lost their lives on all sides as a direct result of this heinous and unprovoked act of aggression. We must remember and remain vigilant to ensure that it can never happen again. More importantly, lest we forget the sacrifice of those who died, were wounded or proudly served, ensuring our freedom that Sunday Morning or since.

Much has occurred in the world since December 7, 1941. The world has seen quite a number of other wars that called upon the Armed Forces of the United States. - Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Desert Storm, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and currently Iraq, not to mention the untold and sparsely known conflicts which have also called upon American Patriots to risk all for preservation of our freedom and way of life.

Yet complacency, our greatest enemy, surrounds us. For a graphic example of which we speak, on September 11, 2001, America was again the target of foreign aggression. What happened on that day was in fact an Act of War and Americans must again rise to the occasion and defend itself or it will only face similar or worse vile acts of destruction in the coming years.

you believe we as a nation are currently right or wrong in our current actions with regards to Terrorism. It has been America's complacency and inaction against these countries and organizations for the past 20 - 25 years or more that has permitted terrorism to fester and grow like a cancer.

Terrorism is not what concerns us, the terrorist ultimately will be defeated. It is complacency and indifference. These two factors can erode the very reasons so many before have served, bled and died to preserve.

God Bless America

When will the media learn?

We stated on April 19, 2007 that the media should be held accountable for the next mass shooting. Now that it has happened again in an Omaha Mall, we thought it fitting to repost the article we wrote after the Virginia Tech massacre.

When will the media learn?

AVELLA IS A HORSE’S ASS!

The article speaks for itself. It needs no further comment from the Patriots but feel free to opine

Avella carriage ban angers owners

BY M. JUNAID ALAM

12/06/2007

Incensed by Councilman Tony Avella's (D-Bayside) impending City Council proposal to ban horse and carriage service in Manhattan, industry members, roughly one-sixth of whom are Bayside residents, are lashing out at the councilman and deriding him as "a horse's ass."

"He is running for mayor on our backs through the animal rights people," asserted Stephen Mallone, a Bayside resident who has been in the business for 20 years. "The people of Bayside should be revolting" against the councilman, he said.

Avella says he is sponsoring the bill to ban the service because horses are overworked by the industry. He also asserted that using horses to cart people around in modern traffic is antiquated, pointing to two accidents in the past two years in which horses died as evidence.

"This is actually torture for the animals," he said. "There's a reason horse carriages don't exist in downtown traffic."

Industry members hotly dispute those accusations, claiming the claims are a product of ignorance and political grandstanding.

Mallone said the horses are well-maintained and well-treated, with their condition overseen by a host of city agencies and clear for all passers-by to see.

"It's an absolute travesty to even imply" the horses are maltreated, he said. The horses work six- to seven-hour shifts and average one ride per hour, he said, with a 15-minute rest required by law every two hours. When they can no longer work, the horses are sent to pastures or maintained privately, but not euthanized, he said.

Ian McKeever, owner of Shamrock Stables on 45th Street and 10th Avenue, said the councilman should worry about his own district instead of meddling in Manhattan. About two years ago, he said, Avella visited one of the stables.

"He was very happy and had nothing negative to say,"McKeever said. "Now he's being a horse's ass."

Avella sharply dismissed that assertion, calling it a "total lie." He said he visited stables, inspected conditions and submitted follow-up questions which, he says, were never answered.

The councilman proposed a partial ban on the industry almost two years ago. "The truth has to come out," he said. "These horses are in bad shape. They're downtrodden."

Eva Hughes, a Bayside resident who owns a carriage service and met her husband in the business, said Avella was aligning himself with radical animal rights groups and distorting the facts. "He's the kind of politician who gives politicians a bad name," she said.

Hughes said the two recent horse deaths were the only ones since 1985 and added that the industry has a vested interest in protecting the animals. "They're our livelihood," she said. "Accidents happen, but we have to be allowed to live."

HOLDEN AND WILKINSON WANT KIDS TO PLAY IN CONTAMINATED PARK

Christina Wilkinson has revealed that the JPCA has inside information that the St. Saviour’s site is contaminated!

We found her post on the Queens Crap!

Unbelievalbly, with this knowledge, they were advocating turning St Saviour’s into a park putting our kids in jeopardy. That is despicable!

See below

The property is contaminated and the housing market is in a slump. It will all come out in the next Juniper Berry.

DAILY NEWS AFFIRMS PATRIOTS ASSERTION THAT HOLDEN DESTROYED ST SAVIOURS

The owner of a historic church site in Maspeth has abruptly scrapped a controversial plan to build housing there - a surprise move that ironically increases the likelihood the church will be demolished. This is not a surprise move, but the only move the developer had to move forward after Holden and his delusional followers refused to compromise.

Maspeth Development LLC's proposal to construct 27 multifamily units on the 1.5-acre property of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church had met with stiff opposition from residents and civic leaders, who wanted it to be preserved and its once-wooded grounds turned into a park. The stiff opposition was nothing more than a tantrum by Holden and his unwillingness to see the tree and not just the forest.

Yet the sudden withdrawal of the residential plan has imperiled the church's future - and may lead the property to be developed for industrial, manufacturing or retail purposes. The sudden withdrawal means that the developer can build “as of right” with little to no input from the community. You can bet your bottom dollar that Maspeth will be getting something industrial, a manufacturing plant, or a big box retail store.

The owner of the St. Saviour's property, who spoke to the Daily News yesterday on the condition that his name not be used, said he was rebuffed recently by city planners in his effort to get a zoning change to allow for a residential development. We believe that City Planning (the Mayor and 99% of local officials) despises Holden and would rather have endured Chinese water torture than give in to the JPCA.

"We were given some indications that it wasn't going to have the support of City Planning, so it was just time to pull the plug," the owner said. We wonder what those indications were. Maybe it had something to do with the noose poster.

Having lost thousands of dollars on taxes, mortgage payments and services in the past two years, he said he is considering proposals that fit with the current mixed-use zoning, but he declined to elaborate. He said he also is entertaining offers to buy the property. In other words, “Maspeth say hello to your new industrial neighbors!”

The unexpected pullback from the residential plan came less than a month after The News reported that indicted City Councilman Dennis Gallagher had been lobbying behind the scenes in favor of the residential plan. Unexpected? We’ve known that this was a possibility from day one!

The developer said he first wanted to clear the entire property, but Gallagher brokered a compromise that would have preserved the church in return for concessions from the Department of City Planning for increased density. Isn’t ironic that the only person really working to save the save the church, was the anti-Christ, Dennis Gallagher?

"The only reason why that church still has four walls is due to Councilman Gallagher," the owner said, adding that without residential development, the agreement to restore the church is now "off the table." It’s becoming abundantly clear that Holden and his dummies are the real fly in the ointment!

One City Planning source said the withdrawal was "completely out of the blue and unexpected." This statement reveals just how clueless City Planning has become.

Planning Department spokeswoman Jennifer Torres said agency officials had asked the owner for greater specificity on how the church would be preserved. What a poignant question. Did city planning want to know what color scheme the developer was going to use during preservation?

"But that would not have held up the certification process," she said. DUH

Despite the apparent setback, community leaders vowed not to give up the fight for the property, on which Revolutionary War artifacts have been found. This is not a setback; this is a major loss thanks to Bob Holden. In addition, Holden and the JPCA haven’t won a fight in over a decade! Remember 7/11?, Unleashed dogs? Arby’s, Walgreens?

"This land can't be lost to a warehouse," said Robert Holden, president of Juniper Park Civic Association, which had filed an unsuccessful lawsuit to block the plan. "This is our heritage." This land will be lost to an industrial eyesore because of the JPCA’s short-sightedness and narrow-mindedness.

Thanks Bob!

HOLDEN WANTS TO EMBRACE BLOODSUCKERS AND THROW KIDS INTO THE STREET

Here we go again. It looks like Robert Holden and the Juniper Park Civic Association’s band of merry misfits are ready to fight with the NYC Parks Department AGAIN. This time it’s over developing the swampy Ridgewood Reservoir into a recreational park for local kids. It is clear that Holden and his morons are more concerned about birds, trees and insects than the well-being and safety of our children.

Having closed in the mid-1960s, the Ridgewood Reservoir no longer supplies water to the people of Brooklyn and Queens, but to the wide variety of birds and animals that now make their home there. Not only do these animals frequent the swamp, but also a wide variety of mosquitoes, ticks and parasites (not Holden, Nunziato and Wilkinson). The entire basin is filled with stagnant water and is haven for disease carrying insects. However, Holden would like the swamp to remain intact and deny our children the opportunity to have a new park in which to play and enjoy.
Considering her physical appearance, Christina Wilkinson should be more sympathetic to the plight of young New Yorkers who are prevented from participating in physical activities because of the limited number parks in our neighborhoods. According to the New York Department of Health, 43% of New York City school kids are obese (24%) or overweight (19%). As a result, record numbers of kids now suffer from obesity induced illnesses such as: type II diabetes, depression, sleep apnea, liver disease and low self esteem. Later in life, obese kids are at a much greater risk to develop high blood pressure and heart disease. While the pervasive presence of junk food doesn’t help, health professionals are increasingly pointing the finger at decreasing levels of everyday activity as kids are literally driven indoors for lack of safe places to walk, bicycle and play.
Holden and his bobble heads already have exclusive use of the Juniper Park ball fields and have prohibited local children from using the fields. Therefore they do not see the importance of the creation of new areas for our children to play. Our children need parks to play in where they can participate in organized sports. The leaders of tomorrow are being shaped and molded on the recreational fields in America. The lessons we teach the youth of today will be with them for the rest of their lives, and there is no better place to teach children about the world than on the field of play. Competition teaches more than just how to win and lose, it teaches a person how to win with class and at the same time be gracious in defeat. It promotes respect for your opponent and teammates, which later on will translate to your co-workers or partners, encourages teamwork and a willingness to work with others towards a common goal. All of these traits can be beneficial in the every aspect of life, not just in the sporting arena. Obviously, Holden and his oompaloompas have never played organized sports.

Organized sports satisfy a growing child’s need for inspiration and physical activity. In this video game age, kids would rather stay inside staring at the TV for hours on end than go outside and start a game of baseball (but not on the Juniper Ball fields because Holden won’t let them), football, basketball, or whatever. This is a problem that should be addressed or the future of America is going to be filled with maladjusted fat people (no offense to Christina)

Sports are an important tool for youngsters; it teaches them so many things that just can't be learned only in the classroom or in the home. Sports can help parents teach their children to persevere, to face adversity, to fight an honest and good fight and never give up. However, these lessons can only be put into practice on the field of play. Organizations like the Queens Falcons and Gottschee Soccer are desperately seeking fields to play on so they can continue to save kids from the perils of the street. They offer an invaluable service to the youth of our community and afford children the opportunity to succeed in life. I never heard a valedictorian thank a yellow-belly sap sucker for mentoring and being instrumental in his or her success.

Unfortunately, Bob Holden and the JPCA do not care about the kids of our community. All they care about are themselves and what they deem is right for the community. They would rather save a tree, a bird or a blood sucking tick (a distant relative of Bob Holden) than providing a safe place for our children to play. As for the Patriots, if we want to go see a tree or a flower, we’ll travel to one of the many beautiful botanical gardens. If we want to see an exotic bird, we’ll travel to the zoo. If we want to be pestered and annoyed by blood sucking parasites, we’ll attend a Juniper Park Civic Association meeting hosted by Bob Holden.

BUILD MORE FIELDS FOR OUR CHILDREN!!!!

Democracy Prevails in Venezuela!

The Anti-American, Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez was defeated in his quest to overhaul the country’s constitution allowing him to run for re-election for life. The Venezuelan people may have sealed the Castro wannabe’s fate because now Chavez will have to step down as president in 2013. Unfortunately, this latest victory is a small battle won as compared to the larger war that must be fought by Chavez’s opposition. The dictator has vowed that he will continue his efforts to anoint himself leader for life of the Venezuelan people.

Not surprisingly, there were some Americans that were sobbing due to Crazy Chavez’s defeat. Sean Penn, Naomi Campbell, Alec Baldwin and Michael Moore could not be reached for comment. However, most look forward to meeting with President Chaves in Caracas in the near future. These Hollywood talking heads really have no clue. They scream that OUR government is practicing censorship, spying on its citizens and silencing detractors but they support a dictator who has shut down various media outlets and has imprisoned hundreds of people for voicing their opposition. Only in Lollywood.

Famous Queens Resident Series, Part XXX

Charlie Chaplin - The “Little Tramp,” famous silent movie star, lived on Mowbray Place in Kew Gardens.

Charlie Chaplin, considered to be one of the most pivotal stars of the early days of Hollywood, lived an interesting life both in his films and behind the camera. He is most recognized as an icon of the silent film era, often associated with his popular "Little Tramp" character; the man with the toothbrush mustache, bowler hat, bamboo cane, and a funny walk.

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in Walworth, London, England on April 26th, 1889 to Charles and Hannah (Hill) Chaplin, both music hall performers, who were married on June 22nd, 1885. After Charles Sr. separated from Hannah to perform in New York City, Hannah then tried to resurrect her stage career. Unfortunately, her singing voice had a tendency to break at unexpected moments. When this happened, the stage manager spotted young Charlie standing in the wings and led him on stage, where five-year-old Charlie began to sing a popular tune. Charlie and his half-brother, Syd Chaplin (born Sydney Hawkes), spent their lives in and out of charity homes and workhouses between their mother's bouts of insanity. Hannah was committed to Cane Hill Asylum in May of 1903 and lived there until 1921, when Chaplin moved her to California.

Chaplin began his official acting career at the age of eight, touring with The Eight Lancashire Lads. At 18 he began touring with Fred Karno's vaudeville troupe, joining them on the troupe's 1910 US tour. He traveled west to California in December 1913 and signed on with Keystone Studios' popular comedy director Mack Sennett, who had seen Chaplin perform on stage in New York. Charlie soon wrote his brother Syd, asking him to become his manager. While at Keystone, Chaplin appeared in and directed 35 films, starring as the Little Tramp in nearly all. In November 1914 he left Keystone and signed on at Essanay, where he made 15 films. In 1916, he signed on at Mutual and made 12 films. In June 1917 Chaplin signed up with First National Studios, after which he built Chaplin Studios. In 1919 he and Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and D.W. Griffith formed United Artists (UA).

Chaplin's life and career was full of scandal and controversy. His first big scandal was during World War I, during which time his loyalty to England, his home country, was questioned. He had never applied for US citizenship, but claimed that he was a "paying visitor" to the United States. Many British citizens called Chaplin a coward and a slacker. This and his other career eccentricities sparked suspicion with FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover and the House Un-American Activities Council (HUAC), who believed that he was injecting Communist propaganda into his films. Chaplin's later film The Great Dictator (1940), which was his first "talkie", also created a stir. In the film Chaplin plays a humorous caricature of Adolf Hitler. Some thought the film was poorly done and in bad taste. However, it grossed over $5 million and earned five Academy Award Nominations.

Another scandal occurred when Chaplin briefly dated 22-year-old Joan Barry. However, Chaplin's relationship with Barry came to an end in 1942, after a series of harassing actions from her. In May of 1943 Barry returned to inform Chaplin that she was pregnant, and filed a paternity suit, claiming that the unborn child was his. During the 1944 trial blood tests proved that Chaplin was not the father, but at the time blood tests were inadmissible evidence and he was ordered to pay $75 a week until the child turned 21. Chaplin was also scrutinized for his support in aiding the Russian struggle against the invading Nazis during World War II, and the U.S. government questioned his moral and political views, suspecting him of having Communist ties. For this reason HUAC subpoenaed him in 1947. However, HUAC finally decided that it was no longer necessary for him to appear for testimony. Conversely, when Chaplin and his family traveled to London for the premier of _Limelight (1952)_ , he was denied re-entry to the United States. In reality, the government had almost no evidence to prove that he was a threat to national security. He and his wife decided, instead, to settle in Switzerland.

Chaplin was married four times and had a total of 11 children. In 1918 he wed Mildred Harris, they had a son together, Norman Spencer Chaplin, who only lived three days. Chaplin and Mildred were divorced in 1920. He married Lita Grey in 1924, who had two sons, Charles Chaplin Jr. and Sydney Chaplin. They were divorced in 1927. In 1936, Chaplin married Paulette Goddard and his final marriage was to Oona O'Neill (Oona Chaplin), daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill in 1943. Oona gave birth to eight children: Geraldine Chaplin, Michael Chaplin, Josephine Chaplin, Victoria Chaplin, Eugene, Jane, Annette-Emilie and Christopher Chaplin.

In contrast to many of his boisterous characters, Chaplin was a quiet man who kept to himself a lot. He also had an "un-millionaire" way of living. Even after he had accumulated millions, he continued to live in shabby accommodations.

In 1921 Chaplin was decorated by the French government for his outstanding work as a filmmaker, and was elevated to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1952. In 1972 he was honored with an Academy Award for his "incalculable effect in making motion pictures the art form of the century." In 1975 England's Queen Elizabeth II knighted him. Chaplin's other works included musical scores he composed for many of his films. He also authored two autobiographical books, "My Autobiography" in 1964 and its companion volume, "My Life in Pictures" in 1974. Chaplin died of natural causes on December 25, 1977 at his home in Switzerland.

In 1978, Chaplin's corpse was stolen from its grave and was not recovered for three months; he was re-buried in a vault surrounded by cement. Charlie Chaplin was considered one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of American cinema, whose movies were and still are popular throughout the world, and have even gained notoriety as time progresses. His films show, through the Little Tramp's positive outlook on life in a world full of chaos, that the human spirit has and always will remain the same.
