Civil Cooperation = Landmark and Development

This is what Robert Holden and his lackeys do not understand, ‘If you are willing to work with others great things can happen.

Case in point, the Domino Sugar Site.

Please read the Daily News Editorial below:

Plans to build much-needed housing, including apartments for middle-income New Yorkers, on the Domino Sugar site in Brooklyn have gotten a major boost from the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. How sweet it is.

Based on a wise agreement between historic preservationists and the projects sponsor, the commissioner granted landmark status to parts of the 11-acre waterfront site so remnants of the sugar factory will be incorporated into the housing-without making the development economically impossible.

Built before the Brooklyn Bridge, the Domino factory churned out sugar for nearly 150 years before closing in 2004. The Community Preservation Corp., a non-profit builder, proposed replacing the crumbling buildings with housing. But preservationists, led by the Municipal Arts Society, defended the hulks.

Then, in a model of civic cooperation, they compromised. Only the three oldest buildings on the site will be landmarked. The corporation will build 2200 residences, 660 of them with affordable rents. It also plans to create that will give access to the waterfront for the first time in more than a century. And the group is planning to find a place for the Domino sign that’s a familiar sight on the East River.

All without rancor or lawsuits. Good work all around.

It is amazing what can be accomplished when you have level-headed, respectable, intelligent and prudent individuals come together to solve a community problem. It is unfortunate, however, that the communities of Middle Village and Maspeth have Bob Holden and the JPCA who only know how to operate with rancor and frivolous lawsuits resulting in nothing be accomplished.

Let’s take Bob Holden out of the St Saviour’s equation and maybe we can save the Church and some land for recreational use while allowing for some reasonable development. Hey, if Brooklyn can do it, we can do it.

I thought Gallagher got a million dollars to buy the church. So why isn't it already saved? I guess he lied, as usual.

Unless you live in West Maspeth, stay the F out of this - we don't want your "reasonable development"

Thanks a lot, Dennis. Thanks for nothing. Thanks for crapping on our working class neighborhood so you can live quietly up in MV by the park. If someone wanted to built garbage on open space next to your house, I bet you'd fight it. But you don't fight for us because you are are corrupt uncaring coward.

Queens Crap has a great post today about a site in eastern Queens that is going to become parkland. More parkland for eastern Queens. The funny thing is that eastern Queens politicians, the community board and civic groups don't seem to feel the need to compromise with a developer and stand united to save this green space. So why is compromise expected in western Queens and presented as the only option, unless there is a whole lotta corruption happening here?

The church property in Maspeth is surrounded by industrial buildings. You can't compare it to Udall's Cove, most of which is already owned by the city and state. When will you learn that attacking everybody is not going to get you anywhere?

Believe it or not....the local realators make sure the homes around the park and Middle Village North are not being sold or rented to minorities or to people who may not have the look of middle to upper class America even though they have the cash and credit. Instead, they show homes in Maspeth and other parts of Middle Village so that the north side stays exclusive. Not fair and against the law. Think this calls for Investigation Investigation Investigation.

"The church property in Maspeth is surrounded by industrial buildings"

Try visiting the neighborhood, jackass. It is surrounded on three out of four sides by houses, the fourth by railroad tracks, not to mention the hundreds of other residences within a few blocks. The industrial / residential mix of the neighborhood is an even more compelling reason to leave the space open. Thanks for showing us all your ignorance as well as lack of respect for our neighborhood, in the spirit of councilman Dennis who has shat upon us all for too long. Go rot in MV.
