FBI Reports that NYC is the Safest Big City in U.S. (but for how long?)

The FBI reported that overall crime in New York City was down by 5.3 percent, making New York City the safest city with populations of more than 1 million residents. The report went on to state that there were 2,517 crimes committed per 100,000 residents, which is an incredible number considering the city’s fast paced environment. Even more impressive is that the FBI predicts that this downward trend will continue despite the NYPD’s recruitment problems and the loss of veterans to attrition.

It seems that the NYPD will fall short of its recruitment goal of the 2000 new police officers for the upcoming academy class. It is becoming abundantly clear that the abysmal starting salary of $25,100.00 is having a devastating impact on the police force. To keep New York City safe we must pay a fair and equitable salary to the brave men and women who keep our streets safe. If the city continues to offer a salary that is not commensurate with the job these police officers perform each day, New York City will no longer be the safest city in the country and once again we will be afraid to walk the streets.

Anyone ready to say “Thank You” to Rudy Giuliani for making this City safe and implementing a strategy to keep crime down. I am Thanks RUDY!

Hey Bloomberg deserves some credit! He stayed with the policing policies of Rudy and improved relations with the African American voters.

I normally loathe saying anything positive about Mike Bloomberg but it is true he has kept this city safe and guided us through some tough times.

Yes I agree Mayor Bloomberg has done a pretty good job, the only mistake he made was raising taxes so high. Since the tax increases we have had record surpluses. Now is the time to lower taxes. If he fails then he will go down in history as a rich tax spending liberal

While the starting salary is abysmal that is not what they walk away with. Let us not forget overtime @ time and a half. Paid medical and a pension plan after 20 years.

I do not know about anyone else but I would love to be able to retire after 20 years and have my medical paid which would add about $300.00 net to my monthly paycheck.

We need to look at the entire package.

Ya, you would "love to" be able to retire after 20 years w/a pension and benefits, so why didn't you take the job? Could it be its extremely dangerous, unbearably stressful, and in the vast majority of cases, completely thankless? The men and women of the NYPD are vastly underpaid, from entry to retirement. That coupled w/the factors cited above is why there is an alarming recruitement and retention problem.

Not all cops are underpaid. They make quite a bit in overtime. They make the arrests and the overtime follows. They have great paid vacations. Their pension is totally tax free (New York State Tax free) upon retirement regardless of any other income. Medical benefits are for life. Yes, it is a dangerous job but they have the sea of blue to back them up not to mention guns and bullet proof vests.

I chose not to do alot of things. The point is they chose to take the job knowing what the salary would be. The truth of the matter is the economy is poor, where will the funds come?

We all make life choices the starting salary is raised after six months by approximately 10k not too shabby, most people do not see this type of increase in 3 years let alone 6 months. This means ot pay is also increased.

I am not saying that starting salary should not be better but lets start looking at the whole package rather than the starting number. And let's question where will we get the funds for these increases???

The facts are Clear NYC Police Officers are underpaid. We need more qualified Police officers and starting at 25K won't do it.

PAY OUR POLICE
