After a long hiatus due to unforeseeable circumstances the Juniper Park Patriots are back. Thank you for all the e-mails urging us to continue posting and thanks for the e-mails thanking us for no longer posting.

As with many of my newly retired friends, (given forced early-out options to close budget gaps and being a young 58, I found that I missed working so I took an overseas working opportunity for a few months!

Now am I back and ready to opine.

So to my supporters I say I missed you and to my critics I say I miss you too!

Obama Guilty of Negligent Homicide?

President Obama cancelled a military training operation on the Arizona border because he did not want to give the “impression” to the rest of the world that the US is militarizing its borders. This bonehead and cowardice move has made a lasting “impression” on the devastated Krentz family because Robert Krentz was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant who crossed the border into Arizona.

Bumbling Obama has not responded to this attack on an American citizen, instead he sent transgendered Janet Napolitano to tell Arizonians that “the border is more secure than ever.” Unfortunately, as the Krentz family buries their loved one, they know that the borders are wide open and Napolitano is a liar.

I wonder if the illegal alien who killed an American citizen was crossing the border to sign up for healthcare!

Three members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have asked for an increase in the Border Patrol's presence, and former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo called on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to dispatch the National Guard to the Arizona border

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is under pressure to beef up border security in the Southwest in the wake of Saturday's killing of a rancher in southeastern Arizona.

Three members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have asked for an increase in the Border Patrol's presence in the Boot Heel of New Mexico, about 10 miles from where the rancher was shot to death over the weekend. U.S. Sens. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall, along with Rep. Harry Teague, say Napolitano's agency needs to take more security steps.

And former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, called on Napolitano to "reject politics and do the right thing" by dispatching the National Guard to the Arizona border.

Cochise County Sheriff's Office deputies and detectives responded to an area northeast of Douglas on Saturday after searchers found the body of 58-year-old Robert Krentz inside his all terrain vehicle on his property. Detectives were able to determine that Krentz apparently came upon one person when he was fatally shot and his dog was wounded.

Cochise County investigators said Monday that Krentz likely was killed by an illegal immigrant, but there's no evidence to suggest there was any confrontation that led to the shooting.

Bingaman, Udall and Teague urged a forward operating station for the Border Patrol in the region. Such outposts put agents closer to the international border. Teague -- whose district includes the border area -- says a station in the Antelope Wells area would better protect people and property.

Tancredo, who attended a Tea Party event over the weekend in Arizona, blasted Napolitano for not doing more to secure the border.

“As governor of Arizona, Napolitano deployed the National Guard to help the Border Patrol do its job… Three days ago, Napolitano told an audience at Arizona State University that the border is more secure than ever," Tancredo said Sunday through his Rocky Mountain Foundation. "I challenge her -- no, I dare her -- to come to this community and try to sell that lie.”

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., whose Congressional district covers the area, described the rancher as a pillar of the community who was recently inducted into the Arizona Farming and Ranching Hall of Fame.

"The cold-blooded killing of an Arizona rancher is a sad and sobering reminder of the threats to public safety that exist in our border communities," Giffords said. "It has not yet been determined who committed this atrocity or why, but I know that federal and local authorities are mobilizing every possible resource to locate and apprehend the assailant."

Giffords said if Krentz's killing is connected to drug cartels or smugglers, the federal government must respond appropriately.

"All options should be on the table, including sending more Border Patrol agents to the area and deploying the National Guard," Giffords said.

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said government has a clear responsibility to aid law enforcement resources at all levels along the border.

"I call on our federal and state governments to work together to bolster the law enforcement resources needed to better protect Arizonans living on the border," Goddard said

U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Omar Candelaria told the Arizona Daily Star that if Krentz's killing was tied to such border crime, it would be a first for the area, to his recollection.

At a news conference Monday, Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever said Krentz was out checking water line and fencing on the land Krentz's family has ranched since 1907. Dever says Krentz had weapons with him in his all-terrain vehicle but didn't use them.

Investigators say Krentz apparently came upon one person when he was shot. While Krentz was still in his vehicle, mortally wounded, he managed to drive the ATV away from the scene at a high rate of speed before becoming unconscious.

Sheriff's deputies, U.S. Border Patrol trackers and Department of Corrections dog chase teams followed footsteps approximately 20 miles south to the Mexican border. No suspects have been apprehended.

Councilman Ulrich Gets His Illegally Parked Car Towed at Parade

Sometimes our Elected Officials feel they are above the law and can do what they want when they want. A perfect example is what Councilman Eric Ulrich did this Sunday in Richmond Hill. According to a local parade coordinator, Eric was invited to participate in a parade to honor the Indian community during their Phagwah Parade but ignored posted parking signs.

Phagwah, or Holi, is the Indo-Caribbean Hindu celebration of the New Year.
Every spring, the Sunday after the first full moon of the Hindu calendar, Phagwah literally paints the streets while children and families "color" one another with dye and powder to chase away the winter grays. The spirit--and high-jinks--is like that of Carnival.

Well Councilman Ulrich was taking part in the festivities and he thought he was above the law and parked his car illegally in an area that would disrupt the parade. I guess he thought that his Police Shield in his window would protect hit but according to witnesses it did not. As a result of his illegal parking, his car was appropriately towed.

Looks like Councilman Ulrich and his elected friends need to realize that just because they are elected they are not above the law!

Reading Miranda Rights to Terrorists Is 'Crazy' and 'Stupid,' Say GOP Congressmen

(CNSNews.com) – The Justice Department confirmed last week that FBI agents in Afghanistan are reading Miranda warnings to suspected terrorists captured there, a practice that Republican congressmen this week branded as "crazy" and "stupid."

Miranda warnings were mandated by a U.S. Supreme Court decision that said domestic law enforcement agencies must inform criminal suspects arrested in the United States of their rights under the 5th Amendment.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law," says the typical Miranda warning. "You have the right to an attorney present during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. Do you understand these rights?"

The Obama administration's decision to make this statement to terror suspects captured on the battlefield in a foreign country has sparked outrage among several Republicans in Congress who spoke with CNSNews.com. It also contradicts what President Barack Obama said in March, when he indicated that Miranda rights did not apply to terror suspects captured overseas.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), as first reported in The Weekly Standard, said he was recently in Afghanistan and personally witnessed FBI agents reading the Miranda warning to captured combatants.

“I was a little surprised to find it taking place when I showed up because we hadn’t been briefed on it, I didn’t know about it,” said Rogers. “We’re still trying to get to the bottom of it, but it is clearly a part of this new global justice initiative.”

“Anytime that you offer confusion in that environment that’s already chaotic and confusing enough, you jeopardize a soldier’s life,” said Rogers.

On Capitol Hill, Rep. John Boozman (R-Ark.) agreed with Rogers and told CNSNews.com: “I think it’s the craziest idea I’ve ever heard in my life, and I think my constituents at home in Arkansas are beyond shock. There’s just no rhyme or reason for it -- it makes no sense at all. We have so many guys that are out there risking their lives, trying to do the best they can, and then to try to put this added burden on them at a time when you’re at war -- like I said it’s crazy. It’s beyond belief.”

Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas) also disagreed with the policy of reading the Miranda warning to captured enemy fighters. “I think it’s a terrible, it’s a terrible idea. They’re not American citizens, for starters. They’re combating-foreigners that are against us in every way. They don’t even wear the uniform, most of them. They’re terrorists. And they should not have the same privileges as the citizens of the United States. That’s where I stand,” Johnson told CNSNews.com.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) strongly disapproved of giving these rights to detainees saying, “I think it’s outrageous. They’re not criminal defendants, and if that’s the way this administration is heading, I think it’s a terrible direction.”

“They’re not criminal defendants, they’re enemies of war captured on the battlefield, and they need to be treated as such,” said McCaul. “What we’re doing is going back to the Clinton years and going through the courts and making criminal defendants, reading them Miranda rights, they’re asking for lawyers over in Afghanistan on the battlefield. … Whether they’re down in Guantanamo, I saw Khalid Sheik Mohammad down there. He’s an enemy of the United States, an enemy of war. And the idea of giving them Constitutional rights, bringing them into the United States and giving them Constitutional rights is just outrageous. To extend that to the battlefield now, where they’re being captured in a time of war, and force our soldiers to give them Miranda rights, we’ve never seen this in the history of this country, and it’s a bad, dangerous precedent to go down.”

Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), whose nickname on Capitol Hill is “Judge” for having served criminal district judge for 20 years prior to entering Congress, said that a terrorist act should be treated differently than a DUI.

“I spent 20 years as a criminal district judge, and I firmly believe that they [captured terrorists] are not entitled to have Miranda rights. Their rights are defined in other ways, they are not defined by our Constitution,” said Carter. “They are treating these people as if they are committing a crime inside the United States, and not as warriors against our soldiers,” Carter told CNSNews.com. “And yet they are warriors against our military.”

Rep. Robert A. Brady (D-Pa.) said he was not familiar with the new policy and therefore could not comment. “I haven’t seen that -- if I see it, I can comment on it, but I don’t know anything about it,” he told CNSNews.com.

President Barack Obama was interviewed on CBS’s 60 Minutes on March 22. During that interview he was asked about the captured terror suspects being held in Guantanamo Bay. Obama said: “The whole premise of Guantanamo, promoted by Vice President Cheney, was that somehow the American system of justice was not up to the task of dealing with these terrorists. I fundamentally disagree with that. Now, do these folks deserve Miranda rights? Do they deserve to be treated like a shoplifter down the block? Of course not.”

It is good to be back in the United States! I just spent a month and half in Dubai assisting a friend who owns a construction company. The financial environment in Dubai is horrendous and all those rich Arab tycoons wrapped in traditional headscarves sipping fruit juice cocktails watching Russian models walk along the beach are fleeing the country.

A six-year boom that turned sand dunes into a glittering metropolis, creating the world's tallest building, its biggest shopping mall and, some say, a shrine to unbridled capitalism, is grinding to a halt. The real estate bubble that propelled the frenetic expansion of Dubai on the back of borrowed cash and speculative investment has burst.

Half of all the construction projects, totaling $582 billion have either been put on hold or cancelled, leaving a trail of half-built towers on the outskirts of the city stretching into the desert.

Local banks have stopped lending and the stock market has plunged 70%. Scrape beneath the surface of the fashion parades and VIP parties, and the evidence of economic slowdown are obvious. Luxury hotels are three-quarters empty. Shopkeepers in newly-built malls are reporting a drop in sales.

In Dubai you expect to see a Ferrari parked beside a Rolls-Royce. However now they are both equipped with scruffy For Sale signs taped to the windows.

Under the doomsday budget Iron Mike Bloomberg is proposing:

• City workers wouldn't get a raise.

• Teachers would get a 2% raise, but only on the first $70,000 of their salaries.

• Lay off 834 city workers - including 299 at libraries, 186 at cultural institutions and 141 at the Health Department.

• close 20 fire companies

• The FDNY would also eliminate the fifth firefighter from 60 engine companies.

• The NYPD would lose 892 officers through attrition, and trim overtime by $25 million this year and $50 million the next - though the agency failed to meet cost reduction targets last year.

• Four city pools in the summer and shorten the season for the rest by two weeks, to save $1.4 million.

• Elementary schools with fewer than 300 students would lose their nurses, to save $3.1 million.

However, the budget proposal revealed today has been said to be the “best case scenario”. If the state fails to provide the anticipated amount of funding, the mayor and the city council may be forced to make additional cuts to services and raise taxes.

The budget will be debated for the next several months by the City Council, which has the capability to move money around and reverse some of the smaller cuts. Hopefully, someone can find some slush fund money under the rug!

What made the speech even more frightening was the botox grimaces on the faces of Speaker of the House Nancy Bella Legosi, VP Joe Bye Bye Biden accented by the Democrats straining to stand up and clap for Obama's load of crap!

"We've excluded lobbyists from policymaking jobs or seats on federal boards and commissions. But we cannot stop there. It's time to require lobbyists to disclose each contact they make on behalf of a client with my administration or Congress."

ANALYSIS

Some good-government advocates say the Obama administration's rules on lobbyists, while well-intended, have limited value and unintended consequences. Some Washington power brokers skirt the rules by simply declining to register as lobbyists, even when their day-to-day work is often hard to distinguish from lobbying.

Former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle, for instance, works for a major Washington lobbying firm, Alston & Bird, but navigates around the rules that would require him to register as a lobbyist. The declining tally of registered lobbyists since Congress passed lobbying reforms in 2007 suggests that many similar firms have taken a similar approach.

Meanwhile, the rules have meant that the White House has had to turn away some well-regarded people who lobby on behalf of non-corporate causes.

"We cut taxes. We cut taxes for 95 percent of working families. We cut taxes for small businesses. We cut taxes for first-time home buyers. We cut taxes for parents trying to care for their children. We cut taxes for 8 million Americans paying for college. As a result, millions of Americans had more to spend on gas and food and other necessities. . . . And we haven't raised income taxes by a single dime on a single person."

ANALYSIS

The Obama administration did cut taxes for most families as part of the stimulus package, which included more than $100 billion in "Making Work Pay" tax cuts for lower- and middle-income families. The reason that he had to emphasize the tax cut Wednesday, though, is that many are unaware they received it because it was spread out across the year in people's paychecks instead of given in a single lump sum.

The thinking behind that approach was that it would make people more likely to spend the money, instead of squirreling it away. But the downside is that, for many, the tax cut remained under the radar.

President Obama has proposed raising income taxes on the wealthy in the coming years. He also favors the taxing of certain health insurance plans -- which could be passed on to some employees in the form of higher premiums.

"North Korea now faces increased isolation and stronger sanctions -- sanctions that are being vigorously enforced. . . . That is why the international community is more united and the Islamic Republic of Iran is more isolated. And as Iran's leaders continue to ignore their obligations, there should be no doubt: They, too, will face growing consequences."

ANALYSIS

North Korea last year tested a nuclear weapon and tested missiles, and Obama has been unable to coax it back to six-nation disarmament talks.

And Iran has proven deeply disappointing to administration officials. Obama issued an unusual message at the Persian new year; wrote two letters to the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; and made a bold offer to assist Iran with an ailing medical research reactor. Yet his outreach to end three decades of estrangement has been greeted with indifference or scorn by Tehran's leaders.

Obama claims the "international community is more united" but does not mention that China, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, is highly skeptical of new sanctions.

"I've called for a bipartisan fiscal commission, modeled on a proposal by Republican Judd Gregg and Democrat Kent Conrad. . . . The commission will have to provide a specific set of solutions by a certain deadline. Yesterday, the Senate blocked a bill that would have created this commission. So I will issue an executive order that will allow us to go forward."

ANALYSIS

Obama did not mention the credibility problems that a commission created by executive order would face, even among Democrats who support the idea. Deficit hawks, in particular, have challenged whether such a committee's recommendations would be guaranteed an up-or-down vote in Congress, and Obama and House leaders have thus far been unable to satisfy that concern.

A larger problem is the threat by key Republicans to boycott the panel. Gregg, a senator from New Hampshire and an ardent advocate of a fiscal commission, has derided a presidentially appointed commission as little more than political cover for Democrats on the deficit.

Regardless of how such a commission is formed, it would not make its recommendations -- and lawmakers would not have to take a position on potentially painful tax hikes and spending cuts in popular social programs -- until after November's midterm elections.

The Next Battle: Stop Socialism

After Obama succeeds in jamming health care changes down the collective throats of his embattled constituents, his next move will be to bring overt socialism to the United States in the guise of regulatory reform.

The legislation he seeks to pilot through the Senate (it already passed the House) literally gives the Secretary of the Treasury the power to seize any company in any sector which, in his judgment, is in danger of insolvency and whose failure would cause systemic damage to the national economy (aka - too big to fail).

Once the government has seized a private business under this horrific law, the Secretary of the Treasury is empowered to fire its management, replace its board of directors, wipe out the equity of its shareholders, and close any divisions or parts of it he wishes. Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez would envy such power.

Exploiting concerns that another global meltdown might be around the corner, the Obama legislation effectively brings socialism to the United States.

There's no other term for it.

Even the existence of such enormous power will have a chilling effect on economic decisions and political freedom.

CEOs of large companies will be constantly looking over their shoulders, worried about government seizure. Since there is no objective standard built into the bill - such as bankruptcy - they will never know when the feds will swoop down and lock the doors. This policy of economic terrorism will influence investment decisions, lead to companies scaling down their size just to avoid seizure, and refusing to take risks which, while good for job creation, might mark them as potentially insolvent.

Politically, corporate executives will have to think long and hard before they donate funds to Obama's political opponents or antagonize the Administration. The standards for government seizure are so flexible and judgmental that a political conflict can easily escalate into a corporate seizure.

This bill is Obama's plan to bring socialism to America. He will use the power this legislation confers widely and ruthlessly to force corporations to do his bidding, follow his policies, or face the prospect of seizure.

Corporate executives, in particular, will come to feel - rightly - that their jobs are on the line if they don't keep their relations with the Administration calm and smooth. Imagine if JFK had had this power when he balked at steel price increases in 1962. Or, if LBJ had used this power to coerce support for the War in Vietnam. Of if Nixon was able to use this kind of power in pursuit of those on his list of enemies.

This legislation, while cloaked in obscure language and replete with bureaucratic gobbledygook, is a dire threat to our freedom.

It is part of the socialist trio that animates Obama's program: regulatory "reform", cap and trade, and health care. Among them, these bills will give him power over all major businesses, all utilities, all manufacturing industries, and all health care providers. There's not much left.

If Massachusetts delivers for democracy and elects Scott Brown to the Senate, we have a good chance of stopping the two legs of this triad that are still pending - regulatory reform and cap and trade.

Parts of the regulatory reform bill are OK. The consumer agency it contemplates could do good things. But one suspects that these provisions are just window dressing to disguise the massive power grab behind the bill. Never before has our government had the power to seize corporations at will. And it certainly has never before been based on such subjective criteria.

But these issues may not excite the massive public opposition that health care reform did. The average American may not realize how dangerous these bills are. But we must mobilize and stop them from passing.

To preserve our freedom.

The people of Massachusetts have stated loud and clear that they will no longer stand by and let Barrack Hussein Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the leftist faction of the Democratic Party ignore the will of the people and destroy our country.

The vote heard around the world is sending a clear message to democrats, Listen to the people or we will vote you out of office! The security of our country, the health of our economy and the preservation of our nation transcends political party and supersedes a narrow-minded presidential agenda.

Republicans, Independents and moderate democrats have had enough! Obama has transformed the party of FDR and JFK into the party of Marx and Lenin!

The political adumbration is upon us! The 2010 elections will save America!

Senator Scott Brown Victory Speech

Thank you very much. I’ll bet they can hear all this cheering down in Washington, D.C.

And I hope they’re paying close attention, because tonight the independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken.

From the Berkshires to Boston, from Springfield to Cape Cod, the voters of this Commonwealth defied the odds and the experts. And tonight, the independent majority has delivered a great victory.

I thank the people of Massachusetts for electing me as your next United States senator.

Every day I hold this office, I will give all that is in me to serve you well and make you proud.

Most of all, I will remember that while the honor is mine, this Senate seat belongs to no one person and no political party - and as I have said before, and you said loud and clear today, it is the people’s seat.

Interim Senator Paul Kirk has completed his work as a senator by appointment of the governor, and for the work he has done, I thank him. The people, by their votes, have now filled the office themselves, and I am ready to go to Washington without delay.

I also want to thank Martha Coakley for her call of congratulations. A hard contest is now behind us, and now we must come together as a Commonwealth.

This special election came about because we lost someone very dear to Massachusetts, and to America. Senator Ted Kennedy was a tireless and big-hearted public servant, and for most of my lifetime was a force like no other in this state. His name will always command the affection and respect by the people of Massachusetts, and the same goes for his wife Vicki. There’s no replacing a man like that, but tonight I honor his memory, and I pledge my very best to be a worthy successor.

I said at the very beginning, when I sat down at the dinner table with my family, that win or lose we would run a race which would make us all proud. I kept my word and we ran a clean, issues oriented, upbeat campaign - and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

When I first started running, I asked for a lot of help, because I knew it was going to be me against the machine. I was wrong; it was all of us against the machine. And after tonight we have shown everyone that - now - you are the machine.

I'm glad my mom and dad, brothers, sisters, and so many family members are here tonight.

Once again, before I go any further, I want to introduce somebody very special... That is my wife, Gail.

And as you know, my wife Gail couldn't join me on the campaign trail because of her work as a Boston TV journalist. But I will let you in on a little secret. She didn't stay neutral today, and she voted for the winner. I rely as always, on Gail's love and support and that of our beautiful daughters.

Arianna will be returning a day or two late to her pre-med studies at Syracuse, because she’s been giving her all to this campaign. As always, Arianna and her sister Ayla have been a joy to Gail and me, and we're so grateful to them both. Even before her campaign performances, millions of Americans had already heard Ayla’s amazing voice on “American Idol.” As Boston College basketball fans know, she’s also pretty good on the court.

If the President thinks they’ve got basketball talent at the White House, I ask him to pick his best teammate and find some time to play two-on-two with Ayla and me.

I’m grateful to all those from across Massachusetts who came through for me even when I was a long shot. I especially thank a friend who was there with encouragement from the very beginning, and helped show us the way to victory - former Governor Mitt Romney.

I’ll never forget the help of another man who took the time to meet with me months ago - who told me I could win, and gave me confidence for the fight. It was all so characteristic of a truly great and heroic American, and tonight I thank my new colleague, Senator John McCain.

On a night like this, when so many people mark your name on a statewide ballot, you think back to the first people who gave you a chance and believed. For the trust they placed in me, and for all they have taught me, I thank my neighbors and friends in my Senate district and especially my hometown of Wrentham. The cause and victory that all America has seen tonight started right there with all of you.

Let me tell you when I first got the feeling something big was happening in this campaign. It was when I was driving along and spotted a handmade, Scott Brown yard sign that I hadn’t actually put there myself.

This little campaign of ours was destined for greater things than any of us knew, and the message went far beyond the name on the sign.

It all started with me, my truck, and a few dedicated volunteers. It ended with Air Force One making an emergency run to Logan. I didn't mind when President Obama came here and criticized me - that happens in campaigns. But when he criticized my truck, that's where I draw the line.

We had the machine scared and scrambling, and for them it is just the beginning of an election year filled with surprises. They will be challenged again and again across this country. When there’s trouble in Massachusetts, there’s trouble everywhere - and now they know it.

In every corner of our state, I met with people, looked them in the eye, shook their hand, and asked them for their vote. I didn’t worry about their party affiliation, and they didn’t worry about mine. It was simply shared conviction that brought us all together.

One thing is clear, voters do not want the trillion-dollar health care bill that is being forced on the American people.

This bill is not being debated openly and fairly. It will raise taxes, hurt Medicare, destroy jobs, and run our nation deeper into debt. It is not in the interest of our state or country - we can do better.

When in Washington, I will work in the Senate with Democrats and Republicans to reform health care in an open and honest way. No more closed-door meetings or back room deals by an out of touch party leadership. No more hiding costs, concealing taxes, collaborating with special interests, and leaving more trillions in debt for our children to pay.

In health care, we need to start fresh, work together, and do the job right. Once again, we can do better.

I will work in the Senate to put government back on the side of people who create jobs, and the millions of people who need jobs - and as President John F. Kennedy taught us, that starts with an across the board tax cut for individuals and businesses that will create jobs and stimulate the economy. It's that simple!

I will work in the Senate to defend our nation’s interests and to keep our military second to none. As a lieutenant colonel and 30-year member of the Army National Guard, I will keep faith with all who serve, and get our veterans all the benefits they deserve.

And let me say this, with respect to those who wish to harm us, I believe that our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation - they do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them.

Raising taxes, taking over our health care, and giving new rights to terrorists is the wrong agenda for our country. What I've heard again and again on the campaign trail, is that our political leaders have grown aloof from the people, impatient with dissent, and comfortable in the back room making deals. And we can do better.

They thought you were on board with all of their ambitions. They thought they owned your vote. They thought they couldn’t lose. But tonight, you and you and you have set them straight.

Across this country, we are united by basic convictions that need only to be clearly stated to win a majority. If anyone still doubts that, in the election season just beginning, let them look to Massachusetts.

Fellow citizens, what happened in this election can happen all over America. We are witnesses, you and I, to the truth that ideals, hard work, and strength of heart can overcome any political machine. We ran a campaign never to be forgotten, and led a cause that deserved and received all that we could give it.

And now, because of your independence, and your trust, I will hold for a time the seat once filled by patriots from John Quincy Adams to John F. Kennedy and his brother Ted. As I proudly take up the duty you have given me, I promise to do my best for Massachusetts and America every time the roll is called.

I go to Washington as the representative of no faction or interest, answering only to my conscience and to the people. I’ve got a lot to learn in the Senate, but I know who I am and I know who I serve.

Some talking moronic head of the media cesspool was lamenting today that the recent demise of the Tiger Woods mystique is just another example of another fallen role model looked up to by millions of misguided children. The idiot went on to introduce some whacked out psychiatrist to explain how parents can help children cope with this tragic event. Stay tuned for a new drug that parents can give children to ease the pain when role models behave badly.

However, I have the perfect remedy for our disappointed children. How about we start admiring REAL ROLE MODELS! The media should stop glorifying these high priced morally deficient, self absorbed celebrities and start recognizing true heroes and positive role models.

Let us start teaching our children that true role models are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Let’s praise individuals that sacrifice their time, resources and personal safety for the benefit of others. Let’s start glorifying, police officers, firemen, military personnel, teachers, doctors, philanthropists, scientist, devoted parents, civic-minded individuals ect ect ect.

Thanks to our parasitic media, there is no shortage of negative role models for our children in today’s society. Children and adolescents imitate the actions and appearance of video, movie, and television stars. However, all this exposure to negative behavior is one sided because today’s media is not promoting family values and modeling pro-social behavior for children. Many parents would cringe to think their daughters would want to imitate some of today’s trendy appearances and behaviors exhibited by Paris Hilton, Britney Spears or the bimbo du jour.

While children do look to the media for role models, PARENTS still have a tremendous amount of influence in their children’s lives and should exert that power on a daily basis. To increase their influence, parents need to limit the amount of time kids spend watching the boob tube and videos and increase the time children spend with them. Children are more likely to imitate parents if parents spend time with them. In addition, parents should be very intentional about what they role model for their children.

New York City’s campaign to make paid sick days a basic workplace standard continues to gain steam. In an op-ed in yesterday’s Daily News, Councilmember Eric Ulrich (R-Queens) calls paid sick days “tripartisan” legislation that “unites New Yorkers from all walks of life.”

Bill to help out ill workers is good for everyone’s health

As local and national public health officials work overtime to stop the spread of swine flu, they have made sure to highlight common sense measures the public can take to do its part. Almost always, near the top of the list is simply avoiding people you might infect when you are sick: staying home from work and keeping sick children out of school.

But for nearly half of all working New Yorkers, that common sense suggestion may not be an option. A report from the Community Service Society and A Better Balance estimates that 48% of New Yorkers - more than 1.65 million people - have no paid sick days where they work. Low-income New Yorkers suffer the most; fully two-thirds (66%) cannot take a paid day off when they get sick. Nor can an astounding 72% of Latino low wage workers.

For these working families, the next cold or flu means a tough choice between their health (and the health of their co-workers) and the paycheck they need to make ends meet.

Worse, the report suggests that access to paid sick days is on the decline. As recently as 2004, 69% of “near-poor” workers - those just above the poverty line ($22,050 for a family of four) - had paid sick leave where they worked. Today, just 33% of near-poor workers report having paid sick days. It appears that the recession is not only making jobs harder to find; the jobs that do exist are increasingly less likely to provide adequate benefits.

That thousands of working families live in fear that getting sick could be financially ruinous is troubling enough. But the consequences of lacking paid sick days may extend far beyond individual workers and their families.

New York City has sensibly made it a policy to close public schools only as a last resort in the event of a swine flu outbreak. But key to the success of the city’s swine flu plan is the ability of parents to follow the city’s own advice by keeping flu-stricken children at home where they cannot infect their classmates and teachers.

For many working parents, that plan may sound doomed to fail. According to the report, 54% of public school parents (and 65% of low-income public school parents) lack paid sick days where they work. Unsurprisingly, 30% of low-income parents report having sent a sick child to school.

There is also evidence that the lack of paid sick days may even be contributing to our broken health care system, where preventable illnesses go untreated and the underserved choke our emergency rooms and hospitals.

Twenty-two percent of low-income workers who have health insurance report visiting an emergency room simply because they could not take time off work for a doctor’s appointment.

The statistics are depressing, but the city can and should take action. The Paid Sick Time bill currently under consideration by the City Council would allow all working New Yorkers to earn paid sick leave on the job. With 39 Council co-sponsors, the bipartisan bill is a common sense way to help working families and protect the public health. (Actually, as a major priority of the progressive Working Families Party, it’s a tripartisan bill.)

New York would not be the first city to implement a universal paid sick days law. San Francisco and Washington have made paid sick leave a basic workplace standard, and more than 15 states are considering similar measures.

It is an idea that unites New Yorkers from all walks of life - from single parents to labor leaders and business groups, liberals and conservatives, advocates for women and advocates for family values. It is time to put paid sick days at the top of the agenda.

...the legislation, specifically, would force most employers to offer 72 hours of paid sick leave - that's nearly two weeks of full compensation. And the definition of "being sick" includes a variety of circumstances, many of which have nothing to do with employee illness. Here's a few specifics of the bill in question...

The legislation would ensure that employers allow a certain amount of temporary time off from work to take care of their own health needs or the health needs of members of their families or to deal with health and safety issues arising from domestic or sexual violence.
Subdivision c of section 22-507 would provide for the accrual of paid sick time. Paragraph one of such subdivision would declare that all employees have the right to paid sick time as provided in this section. Paragraph (2) of such subdivision would require that all employers provide a minimum of one hour of paid sick time for every thirty hours worked by an employee. Under this provision, employers would not be required to provide more than seventy-two hours of sick time for an employee in a calendar year.
The legislation would benefit society by providing time for domestic violence victims to go to court or to relocate to safety and would allow such victims to protect themselves.
...supporters of the bill, like Mr. Ulrich and the Left-wing, union-based Working Families Party, claim that it would have a positive effect on the health of NYC overall. The main example they cite is that because parents have no paid sick days, they are forced to send their sick children to school in direct conflict to good public health policy and the recommendations of the Department of Education. If these workers had paid sick days, they could stay home and take care of their sick kids and avoid the risk of infecting other children, which could spread the illness widely.

Oddly, there is a strong reference to "domestic violence" cases and "domestic partners" being covered, which seems misplaced in a bill to protect sick workers. There are many "good" reasons why a worker could miss time on the job. Why specifically cite just illness and domestic violence in this bill? It seems that there is the Pandora's box being opened with this legislation, as many interest groups will line up claiming that employers should offer "sick time" for a number of difficult situations for employees - all potentially deserving of paid time off.

As well, the entire burden of this "tripartisan" piece of legislation, as stated by Councilmember Ulrich, will fall on employers. If this is such a good idea, why not have workers themselves pay into the system to fund this new employment benefit? When NYC is already the one of the most un-competitive places to be an employer, how can it make sense for the Council to pass another unfunded employment mandate on the business community?

What NYC needs now are jobs. Additional mandated employee benefits, even if they can be argued as beneficial to the city at-large, will do nothing to increase employment in NYC and, to the contrary, this measure forces employers to think long and hard about adding additional workers to their rolls.

Lastly, this position seems odd for a self-proclaimed "conservative" to writing about in the Daily News. If the average worker and employer can't count on Republican representatives to fight for their concerns, who do they have to turn to? In many ways, this piece of legislation could have been just as easily sponsored by Councilmember Leticia James as the GOP's Ulrich. Do UE readers think this is the direction the Republican Party should be going?

Here is the hysterical article printed in this edition of the Juniper Fairy Tale

On Monday November 16th while taking his usual 45 minute morning walk around the community, JPCA president Bob Holden noticed two suspicious looking men walking toward Middle Village at the pedestrian overpass over the Long Island Railroad from the Rego Park side. What made the men stand out was the fact that they appeared to be walking at a very slow pace while looking behind and from side to side. Both were carrying large backpacks and both appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent. (Now we know Mr. Obama and all of the overly sensitive politically correct pundits would not want us to write that however the 911 operator asked for a description of the men.)

As Holden walked past the men and onto the bridge the two stopped in the middle with one man looking eastbound and the other westbound as the speeding commuter trains zoomed by at 80 mph.

Holden called 911 to report suspicious looking men hanging around the overpass. How many citizens would even do that? We hope that most would but JPCA members are constantly reminded to be alert. After the 911 call and a call to the Community Affairs office of the 104th Precinct, Holden doubled back to the bridge about 10 minutes later and witnessed the same men standing looking eastbound at two trains. By then the men observed Holden hanging around on the Middle Village side so Bob called for backup as to not make the men suspicious. JPCA secretary Bob Doocey lives a block away and offered to walk to the site and keep an eye on the men until the police arrived.

About 10 minutes later Doocey arrived with no men in sight and no police. About 5 minutes later a van with two officers from the 104th Precinct School Safety squad drove up to the scene. Doocey said the men probably walked down to the other side of the bridge. One officer responded to him that because it was the area of another precinct, “we don’t go there.”

It’s amazing how fast we forget the memories and threats of 9/11/2001. With the terrorist trials coming to New York City it doesn’t seem like we are really ready. God help us all.

Elizabeth Crowley and the city are screwing taxpayers again. According to recent articles in the local papers, Bocce Balls for brains Elizabeth Crowley has allocated $325,000 to rebuild the Bocce Courts located in Juniper Park. We did some research and cost comparison to find out how much does it really cost to build a long box with a playable surface.

You will be surprised and angered to know that we called four Bocce Court specialists and they informed us that construction can be anywhere from $2000 to $40,000 (for a very elaborate and ornate court). When we informed them of the $325,000 price tag for the Juniper Courts they laughed and asked if they could get on the bidder’s list.

You may ask why would Elizabeth Crowley make this outlandish allocation to build bocce courts when only a very small percentage of park goers utilize them. I have never seen mothers and their children frolicking on the bocce courts, I have never seen dog owners playing fetch with their pets on the courts, I have never seen kids playing catch on the courts, so why o why. Have you ever tried to play bocce ball on the courts? Good luck. You have to be “member” of the bocce society!

I’ll tell you why. Elizabeth Crowley is a pandering, self-serving moron. She wants to curry favor with the Italians because her opponent IS Italian. Crowley cares about bocce as much as Bob Holden cares about preventing domestic violence. The only thing she cares about is votes and she is using OUR money to get them.

Imagine the good that could have been done for community if the $325,000 was allocated selflessly, without political motivation and without stupidity.

Sideboards & Backboards - Must extend 6 to 12 inches above the playing surface. Made with rigid treated lumber, minimum of 2 inches thick. The sideboards must be sufficiently supported or have a hard plastic/rubber bumper along sideboards so that a ball hitting the sideboards at an angle greater than 30 degrees will consistently bank off the sideboards.

Court Material - The court must be constructed similar to standard tennis courts with a minimum 3 inch base of crushed stone on a compacted sub-base and then covered with 2 inches minimum of clay type materials compacted for a hard, smooth, level surface. The top surface must be kept as level as possible and kept treated with a fine grade of loose topping clay that can be brushed to smooth the court. Clay courts must be wet down to keep the clay properly conditioned and compacted. A continuous watering system under the clay surface like good tennis courts is preferred. Drain holes must be provided to prevent standing water on the court. Bocce court contractors are hard to find, however, tennis court contractors are more plentiful and can easily do excellent bocce courts.

Painting - The sideboards & backboards may be painted (preferable white). Easily visible vertical lines 2 inches wide must be painted on the sideboards to indicate the location of the foul lines and center line. Vertical lines 1 inch wide may be painted on the sideboards & backboards to indicate the 12 inch lines for the initial pallino throw.

Other Improvements - Other court improvements such as, scoreboards, protective court end walls, roofs, benches, ball racks, walkways, lighting, handicapped accommodations, etc. are the option of the club. However, no improvement shall interfere with the standard playing rules or playing on the basic court defined above.

Controversy Erupts Over Glendale Kiwanis Funding

A $3,500 allocation to the Glendale Kiwanis by former City Councilman Anthony Como has turned into a political hot potato after he accused Elizabeth Crowley, who currently represents the area, of diverting the money to another organization.

Como (R-Middle Village), who briefly represented the 30th District after winning a special election last year, sent a letter on Tuesday to fellow Kiwanis members and local papers stating that the funding had been reallocated in January. “I found this very upsetting because I know that groups such as yours depend greatly on this money,” wrote Como.

In the letter, Como stated that he had been contacted by the group’s past president, Joe Aiello to find out why the Kiwanis never received the funds. In the e-mail containing the letter, Como included correspondence he said was from the City Council’s Finance Division confirming that Crowley had diverted the money to another group. “Since we didn’t do a transparency resolution until late January, CM Crowley’s office decided that they wanted to give that money to another [organization] as it is her prerogative to reallocate any funds that had not yet been registered with the Comptroller’s office,” the e-mail stated.

In response, Crowley (D-Middle Village) said she is “very surprised [Como] would stoop this low” and contended that Como never came through on his promise to fund the Kiwanis. “He is making accusations that are not true, just because he failed to meet the community’s concerns as a councilman.” She maintained that the money was never included in last year’s budget and was never diverted to another group.

“He’s being dishonest,” added Crowley. “This is an example of mudslinging that is really based on lies. I’m disappointed in Anthony Como because honestly I thought more of him as an individual than to put together a letter which is not truthful.” Crowley noted that she provided the Kiwanis with $5,000 in this year’s budget. "If you look at the truth, you will know that Anthony Como didn't put a dime aside for the Kiwanis last year as he promised,” she said.

Caught in the middle is Aiello, who said Wednesday that the whole situation is much ado about nothing. He chalked it up to a simple mistake and says he lays no blame with either Como or Crowley. “At first I said ‘gee, we could have used this money,’” he recalled. “Anthony Como called apologizing and I told him there is no foul here. I had a meeting with Elizabeth two weeks ago, she said she would see what she can do about retrieving the money and I said again it was no foul and not to worry about it.”

Como said the letter wasn’t intended to be a political attack against Crowley, despite his relationship with fellow Republican Tom Ognibene, who is challenging her in November. “This is not a political thing, it’s coming from me. If anyone is to blame here, it is Councilmember Crowley – she’s the only one who put me up to this by pulling their funding.”

Ognibene said he had “zero” involvement in the letter and noted that the whole issue arose when Aiello contacted Como. “She’s trying to deflect the fact that she pulled the funding for the Glendale Kiwanis, that’s what the city of New York said, not Tom Ognibene. They asked Anthony why they weren’t getting funding so he made the inquiry and that’s the answer that came back... Let her say it’s not true instead of blaming me. Of course if she did she would be lying again.”

While he doesn’t blame either side, Aiello said he wasn’t thrilled that the club, which is ded- icated to helping those in need, was thrust into the middle of a political fight. “I’m caught in between here and I don’t like it,” he said. “I appreciate what they try to do for the club and I have the utmost respect for Anthony Como and Elizabeth Crowley. What happened here was just a mistake, something that happened. Our club could have used the money, no doubt, but we didn’t lose any sleep over it. There is no harm or foul here... I’m a little bit disappointed. This didn’t have to go to the papers.”

The City Council Finance Division did not return a call by press time seeking clarification as to whether the money was ever allocated.

Tom Ognibene wants his job back.
The former councilman and Middle Village lawyer will challenge Democratic incumbent Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village) on Nov. 3 to reclaim the 30th Council District seat, a position he was term limited out of in 2001.

The Republican contender’s campaign is conservative to the core — an all or nothing bet in a district where traditional blue-collar values run deep despite a two to one Democratic advantage among registered voters.

If elected, Ognibene is promising to fight for lower taxes, smaller government, commercial traffic reforms, more hospitals, a greater police presence and a return to local school zoning.

The GOP nominee is promoting a plan that would require a two-thirds majority to raise taxes and wants to cut government spending through changes to the city’s pension system, debt refinancing and consolidations, pay freezes and layoffs among the city’s various agencies.

“There are agencies in the city government with people walking around and doing nothing — it’s just appalling,” Ognibene said. “Nobody wants to make tough decisions. I want to force people to make tough decisions. The citizens paying the taxes are making tough decisions, aren’t they?”

Ognibene rejected arguments that sending government workers to the burgeoning unemployment lines would ultimately hurt the city by exacerbating financial problems in the private sector with fewer families spending at local businesses.

“Unless we begin to make the choices that I’m suggesting, we are heading for armageddon anyway — so we might as well begin to look at it now,” he said.

Ognibene is also proposing changes to the rules governing commercial traffic in the area, an effort he said would help remove trucks from the district’s crowded streets.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for rail traffic that can substitute for the truck traffic,” he said. “You can control the flow of traffic by having DOT map out better routes. You can have DOT organize themselves better and come up with a better plan than the current federal system that they use for deciding where traffic controls are and how they’re timed.”

Ognibene condemned citywide zoning regulations on new schools, calling for a return to neighborhood districting with a voucher system in place for parents who want to send their kids elsewhere.

“We need schools for kids from our communities — Maspeth, Middle Village, Elmhurst. When these new high schools are built, they’re universally zoned,” he said.

The Republican candidate said that education problems in poor communities are overblown and that efforts to improve the situation by integrating students from various economic backgrounds across neighborhood lines are now putting an unfair burden on parents in good school districts.

“We’ve never really addressed that issue,” he said. “Why are kids in poor neighborhoods not doing well? So they’re going to come to a new school and they’re going to do better? I want my child to go to a community school. I don’t want them to travel around the universe. I want them to go to a school where they’re going to feel safe and they’re going to learn. And I don’t want to sacrifice that because there are other communities in this city that don’t have the same commitment.”

Ognibene said the city needs to address problems in underperforming institutions individually and urged parents in troubled communities to take responsibility for improving their schools.

“This is the nonsense argument that’s infected all of our thinking in this world,” he said. “People have to learn to be accountable. What your status is in life and how your children learn is directly related to what emphasis you want to put on education in your community. Join the PTA. Fight for safer schools. Don’t say, ‘What the hell, I’m going to thrust my problems on you.’”

In the wake of this year’s hospital closings, Ognibene is urging Queens lawmakers to step up efforts to secure funding for new healthcare facilities at the St. John’s and Mary Immaculate sites.

And while he praised the city’s declining crime rates, Ognibene also stressed the need for additional police officers to deter lesser crimes, including vandalism and auto theft.

This year, there is a real battle between Tom Ognibene and Elizabeth Crowley. Tom Ognibene, the former Council Member, served his community well and won accolades from many civic and community organizations and former Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg. His public persona was damaged by the Manhattan District Attorney unfairly, whose sole goal was to deny Ognibene a judgeship. On the other hand, the Democratic candidate, Elizabeth Crowley, is a “political pro” who gained her electoral knowledge while working “under” convicted Assembly Member, Brian McLaughlan.

Elizabeth Crowley is everything that you should detest in government, an inexperienced nitwit whose only political tool is her family name. This year, she used her cousin’s influence to manipulate the City budget and use it as a campaign tool for her re-election. Unions, special interest and the Obama wave put her in office and she walks around the district like a robo-idiot, spewing their cause, notwithstanding the detriment it causes to her community.

In a world where Albany has been turned upside down by the greedy, arrogant, self-centered legislative body, the City Council has become a cesspool of political fraud led by the likes of Elizabeth Crowley. We sometimes take harsh stances. Maybe we shouldn’t call her Dizzy Lizzy. Maybe when we take such harsh stances in opposition to her, people don’t take us as seriously as they should. But now we implore all those who read this blog to concern yourself with good government, character and integrity. I urge you to restore some decency to the City Council, reject the campaign fraud of Elizabeth Crowley and vote for the best choice that we have, Tom Ognibene.

And if Charles Ober is still watching, your candidacy was a breath of fresh air on the issues bucking the party establishment and standing up to those you sought to represent. Dems Pick Miller In 38th AD

As expected, the Queens Democrats have tapped Mike Miller as their candidate to run in the Sept. 15 special election for the seat vacated by scandal-scarred former Assemblyman Tony Seminerio.

The decision was made by three of the four district leaders in the 38th AD. Seminerio, who remains a district leader despite the fact that he pleaded guilty to, and is awaiting sentencing for, influence-peddling, did not show up at the party HQ to vote.

The decision on Miller, a Community Board 5 member who has never held elected office, was not unanimous.

He got two votes, while Nick Comaianni, a member of Community Board 9 and Community Education Council of District 24 president, received one.

A Queens tipster says the vote was 2-1 for Comianni a few weeks ago. No word on who flipped.

Queens Democratic Party Executive Secretary Michael Reich confirmed Miller's selection and the fact that Seminerio was a no-show. ("We weren't surprised," Reich said of the erstwhile lawmaker's absence in selecting his potential successor).

Miller has been cross-endorsed by the Conservative Party (they formally nominated him last Friday after Gov. David Paterson changed his mind and re-issued a proclamation for the 38th AD special election).

Seminerio regularly ran with the Conservative line - and sometimes the GOP line, too. But the demographic of the district has been changing, with a lot of minorities moving in (it was only 42 percent white after the 2000 Census), supplanting the right-leaning, Caucasian conservative Democrats.

I asked Reich if he's worried Miller's cross-endorsement could hurt him since the special election is being held concurrent with the primary, which tends to draw hard-core Democrats. That would be a big problem for Miller if the WFP, which hasn't picked a candidate yet, decides to nominate someone to his left.

"It's going to be up to us to put the Democratic candidate forward," Reich said. "I believe we can do that. Mike is a guy who has been active in the community for a long time. Honestly, he has not been that active in Democratic politics, but he's a life-long Democrat and he demonstrated to us that he has a great deal of community support."

"...We're trying to add something new and different to the mix here. We're looking to build the party and Mike will help us do that. I don't know what the Working Families Party will do. I hope they'll support our candidate, but we haven't spoken to them as of yet."

It's worth noting that the labor-backed party and its allies have bucked the Queens Democrats in several Council races this year. On the 38th AD question, WFP spokesman Dan Levitan was non-committal, saying only:

"WFP members will look at all the candidates in the race and endorse the one who will best represent working people in Queens."

Of course, letting the 38th AD contest go forward as a regular election was a dangerous proposition, too, because there's not much of a mayor's race to pull voters and the one person who will be spending a lot on GOTV is a certain billionaire whose name will appear on the GOP line.

(Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who wants to keep the seat in Democratic hands, was worried about this, and pushed Paterson to reinstate the special election he had called off).

Meanwhile, one of the three other Democrats who petitioned their way onto the ballot and are now being denied a run by Paterson's special election decision - is filing a federal lawsuit against the governor this afternoon.

No word yet on what Albert Baldeo is going to do.

The Republicans are expected to Donna Marie Caltabiano, who also filed petitions and got on the ballot, to run.

Flouting the calls of good government groups and candidates who have already petitioned their way onto the ballot, Gov. David Paterson has called a special election to fill the seat left vacant by the abrupt resignation in June of former Assemblyman Tony Seminerio.

The election in the 38th AD will be held on primary day, Sept. 15, Paterson announced in a press release, adding:

"This special election will ensure that the residents in part of Queens County will have the representation they need in the New York State Legislature. I encourage all eligible voters to come out to the polls on September 15th and select their future Assembly member."

This move isn't exactly a surprise.

Paterson's office informed the city Board of Elections last month that he was likely to call a Primary Day special election, leaving the decision of who should run to replace Seminerio up to party leaders in Queens.

The Democratic candidate will be selected by the 38th AD's four district leaders, which includes Seminerio himself. (He doesn't have to give up the position until he is sentenced on the corruption charge to which he pleaded guilty in late June).

There has been some speculation (fueled by former Senate candidate Al Baldeo, who filed petitions to run in the 38th, was put on the ballot by the board and has the support of Sen. John Sampson), that Seminerio might try to get his son nominated. But I haven't heard anything from the party on that.

Baldeo had used the opportunity of Councilman Bill de Blasio's brief ballot access scare to argue that depriving the voters of a wide variety of choices - be it by bouncing candidates from the ballot or letting political bosses hand pick a candidate - would be anti-democratic.

The Queens Democratic Party's Mike Reich was not shy about telling me that political organizations generally prefer special elections because they are "always easier" for party leaders to "have a handle on."

Also, he argued, a special election is cost-effective, because it cuts down on the number of candidates and thus avoids a pricey primary.

It will be interesting to see if Lourdes Ventura, an aide to Senate President Malcolm Smith, who had expressed interest in Seminerio's seat but didn't file petitions, resurfaces.

There has been a lot of talk about CB 5 member Michael Miller, who has been amassing support, including an endorsement from Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, cousin of Queens Democratic Chairman Joe Crowley, and the Queens Conservative Party.

Winning reelection in November would give City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley her first full term - and a chance to finally take a break from the campaign trail.

The Glendale Democrat is gearing up for her third election in 17 months - a whirlwind schedule triggered when the district's former councilman, Dennis Gallagher, pleaded guilty to sex-abuse charges last year.

"The pace has been nonstop," Crowley (D-Middle Village) said of her campaign in the 30th Council District. "It's kept me going. It's kept me reaching out."

Crowley lost a four-way nonpartisan special election to Anthony Como in June 2008. But she then unseated him in a November special election, winning the right to serve the final year of Gallagher's term.

But with a four-year term at stake this time around, Crowley, 31, faces a general election challenge from a battle-tested Republican Thomas Ognibene.

Ognibene, a 67-year-old lawyer from Middle Village, served on the Council from 1991 to 2001. His experience and name recognition make GOP insiders giddy at his prospects for retaking the district, which includes Middle Village, Glendale and Ridgewood, with parts of Richmond Hill, Woodhaven and Forest Hills.

Crowley, however, has proven to be an adept fund-raiser, amassing $55,115 so far compared with Ognibene's $36,596, city records show.

Ognibene, who has spent $8,330 so far from his war chest, finished third in the June 2008 special election and bowed out of the contest last November.

He said he decided to run this year because he believes Crowley rode the coattails of Barack Obama's popularity last year.

During his decade in office during the Rudy Giuliani era, he said, government cooperated with citizens to solve quality-of-life problems and improve safety.

He said he thinks that approach has been abandoned in recent years.

Crowley, who has spent $16,580 of her campaign cash so far, slammed Ognibene's Obama-factor argument. She noted that in some parts of the district, like Maspeth, she outperformed Obama by "10% of the vote."

She added that she helped improve the quality of life in the district by spurring completion of a downzoning for Middle Village, Maspeth and Glendale, which the Council passed last week.

Ognibene said the rezoning had begun while he was in office.

Elizabeth Crowley is running for the third time in little over a year for her Council seat, but what might have been an easy race to her first full four-year term has turned surprisingly difficult due to intrusion from an unlikely corner: Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Crowley has a strong opponent thanks wholly to the mayor, who while luring the Queens GOP himself, began recruiting former Council Member Tom Ognibene into the race at Council Member Eric Ulrich’s ceremonial swearing-in in February.

Ognibene, who held Crowley’s seat from 1993 through 2001, demurred. So Bloomberg called back later with added pressure.

“We need you back in the Council, Tom,” said the mayor, who in 2005 fought to keep Ognibene off the Republican ballot. (Ognibene, who was then a fierce critic of the mayor, eventually challenged him on the Conservative line in the general election.)

Bloomberg won the GOP line in part by promising Queens GOP leaders that he would help down-ballot candidates.

While some have questioned his commitment to this elsewhere around the city, he has so far kept pledges to back Ognibene. Resources like manpower, talking points and polling data will likely make Ognibene the beleaguered GOP’s best hope for picking up a seat in the November.

Bloomberg petitioners helped the former Council minority leader get on the ballot with an objection-proof number of signatures. And a public endorsement, with swings through the heart of the district, is only weeks away, according to Bloomberg advisers and Queens Republicans.

But some Queens Democrats are pushing back on the idea that Bloomberg will really get so involved. Democrats dismiss Bloomberg’s promises however as a ploy to get the Queens GOP endorsement—promises they say he has not kept.

Crowley has been personally insisting to colleagues in private conservations that “the mayor’s not going to help Tom,” according to those who have spoken with her. Her aides insist that Bloomberg’s support will amount to no more than a mailing or two.

“I haven’t seen him say one thing about Tom Ognibene,” Crowley said in an interview. “Not one.”

Ognibene, meanwhile, has made the mayor’s support one of the biggest talking points in his campaign. He has touted his arrangement with Bloomberg as proof that he can bring substantial resources back to his Queens district, even as a Republican.

“The most important relationship that I have is the relationship with the mayor’s office,” he said. “He was the one who asked me to run.”

Rep Doggett met with constituents outside a grocery store in south Austin regarding the health care bill. Apparently the event was mostly advertised in liberal leaning local publications. He did not bring a megaphone, so hearing what he had to say was difficult. When he started making the move to leave, the crowd erupted chanting "Just say no!" His worker got the car ready to shuttle him away but the crowd surrounded it and it took a while for him to get out of the parking lot. The whole time, the "Just say no!" chant continued. It probably won't matter - from his facial expression, body language, and what was heard to come out of his mouth, he's for the the health care bill in its present form and has no openness to change on that.

My source has confirmed to me what up until now I have only been able to speculate was the case: Russian strategy is designed to split U.S. military forces between those that back their agent provocateur, Barack Obama, and those who back the Constitution.

It has been obvious throughout to those few of us who are aware of the elaborate deception carried out by the Kremlin communist criminals (who went to the extraordinary length, even for them, of staging the collapse of their own empire) that the installation of Barack Obama as president of the United States was their insidious doing. It is also well known by those in what I'll call the "Golitsynian" community that the ultimate goal of the worldwide communist revolution (begun by Lenin and continued today by the current occupants of the Kremlin and their subordinates in capitols throughout the world) is the destruction of the United States militarily, thus making the enslavement of the entire world at the hands of communists absolutely unstoppable. What has not been definitively known, however, is precisely the strategy they plan to employ in the "Final Phase" of their plan. Until now.

I have just been in contact with one of the foremost analysts of Russian/communist strategy, a man well connected with high-level sources in Moscow, and it has been explained to him and thus to me in no uncertain terms that civil war in the United States is in fact the end game that Kremlin strategists are in the process of implementing.

The information about communist agent (whether witting or unwitting is irrelevant) Obama's unquestionably disqualifying citizenship status has been available to be presented in the media, as well as among our nation's governmental elites, since last summer, and its suppression (by order of the Kremlin) was to be expected (for the obvious purpose of getting him elected). But, there are many in the communist stable the Kremlin could have picked to ascend the highest office in the land in order to continue the sovietization process in this country (and indeed Obama is not the first of their agents to be placed there), so the choosing of Obama, a man clearly disqualified from serving, indicated that an extraordinary operation was underway. It indicated, one way or another, that the Final Phase of the Shelepin Plan has been launched.

But what exactly is the Final Phase of the Shelepin Plan? The Kremlin strategists, having such an enormous strategic advantage as well as having (and in part as a result of)arranged the chess board of geo-politics and domestic U.S. conditions as they have, have innumerable options. The destruction of the American economy that is ongoing is their doing. Islamic terrorism is their proxy. Kremlin co-conspirators have taken power in the majority of countries in the world. This offers them many options to orchestrate the destruction of the "Main Enemy," and it is easy to speculate on the many moves they might make.

But there is no longer a need to speculate. I have absolute trust in my source, both in his credibility and his judgment, and my source has informed me that the U.S. military is to be split into opposing factions over the Obama citizenship issue, and civil war which will weaken and ultimately destroy the country will ensue. This is not his opinion, it is not the opinion of his sources. It is, rather, the plan. It is what the Kremlin intends. It is the Final Phase.

$2M in combined capital funding from Borough President Helen Marshall and Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley will pay for 100% of phase 1 of the reconstruction of St. Saviour's at the All Faiths Cemetery site in Middle Village.

When the reconstruction is finished, the historic structure will be called the Richard Upjohn Educational Center and Amphitheatre, after the famed architect who designed the church in 1847.

“This is a huge victory for the people of Queens, especially for those living in Maspeth and Middle Village,” said Crowley.

I guess it's all about the architect now and no longer about our history. That's a shame. How exactly is this a "huge victory" for the people of Maspeth? Are we overstating things just a bit, Liz?

Meanwhile, the original 1.5 acre site had previously been for sale at prices up to $11M, but is now being offered for $8.5M. The lie that you can build up to 85,000 square feet of residential is still being advertised. (The developer requires a zoning change in order to do that, as previously explained.) It's also been advertised elsewhere as "perfect for a hotel or shopping mall" which is quite laughable in that location and in this market. The site is currently being used as a parking lot for dumpsters.

Now, in the months leading up to the election, is the perfect time to call attention to the neglect of Queens history perpetrated by the Bloomberg administration. Glad everyone is back on board. The developer applied to the DOB for an excavation permit (to level the archaeologically sensitive land) but was denied yesterday.

So, when's the next rally to turn this site into a park?

I didn't like the way the Juniper Berry wrote that this was the "last remaining landmark in our community." Middle Village has several historic places left, such as the Furmanville house, the Mt. Olivet Crematory and the Hess-Miller Funeral Home.

If they are talking about Maspeth, well, the church is no longer "remaining" in Maspeth. But it does still have Town Hall, the Maurice house and when this was written - the Methodist Church.

So that statement about the "last remaining landmark" was a bit over the top. They're overselling this project.

Indeed, the church will now be in All Faiths Cemetary but the property is still up for grabs. Can someone please explain how the JVC saved the people who live in this area. DUH!! If the church has such an historical significance, why not place the church in Juniper Park where all can come learn about St Saviour’s? Tony Numbnuts wants the public to believe that the $1 million dollars for the preservation of the church set aside by Councilman Gallagher and the City Council is available for this ridiculous plan to transplant the church to another location. Tony Tulips was a longtime member of CB 5 and is now a potential self proclaimed candidate for City Council yet he fails to understand even the basics when it comes to government. Nunziato is quoted as asking for the million dollars that Councilman Gallagher secured for the purchase and preservation of St. Saviour's Church and use that money for the cost of moving the church from one private location to another.

Tony is too ignorant, lazy and clueless to realize that this cannot happen without a City Council Budget Modification. Any transfer of funds from one city agency to another requires a vote of the entire city council in which a majority must vote in favor.

In addition, if the city is to acquire the property, there must be a strict adherence to the ULURP process (The Uniformed Land Use Review Process) which is mandated by law. This process allows for public debate and dialogue between the public, NYC Council, Community Board and Borough President. Consequently, this process could take well in excess of a year. It would have been much easier and time efficient if Sponge Bob and Twit Tony agreed to have the church saved and restored with reasonable development on site as originally proposed.

It is extremely sad that Tony is more interested in getting his name in the papers than understanding city government and the laws that govern its process. More importantly, Tony Tulips fails to recognize that we all see through his despicable charade. This political neophyte lacks not only the intellectual capability to be elected councilman; he also lacks the experience and institutional knowledge of government and its operation.

Consequently, the St. Saviour’s site will be the future home of an intrusive manufacturing plant while Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumber try to claim an empty victory. Let’s face it folks, the metal midgets from the JPCA executive board were never fighting to save a church or ensure that Maspeth gets more green space, all they care about is beating the Mayor, the Parks Department, the Landmarks Commission and Councilman Gallagher. Congressional plans to fund a massive health-care overhaul could have a job-killing effect on New York, creating a tax rate of nearly 60 percent for the state's top earners and possibly pressuring small-business owners to shed workers.

New York's top income bracket could reach as high as 57 percent -- rates not seen in three decades -- to pay for the massive health coverage proposed by House Democrats this week.

The top rate in New York City, home to many of the state's wealthiest people, would be 58.68 percent, the Washington-based Tax Foundation said in a report yesterday.
That means New York's top earners, small-business owners and most dynamic entrepreneurs will be facing new fees and penalties.

The $544 billion tax hike would violate one of President Obama's ironclad campaign promises: No family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 199s.

Under the bill, three new tax brackets would be created for high earners, with a top rate of 45 percent for families making more than $1 million. That would be the highest income-tax rate since 1986, when the top rate was 50 percent.

The legislation is especially onerous for business owners, in part because it penalizes employers with a payroll bigger than $400,000 some 8 percent of wages if they don't offer health care.

But the cost of the buy-in to the program may be so prohibitive that it will dissuade owners from growing their businesses -- a scary prospect in the midst of a recession.

Obama took to the airwaves yesterday with ads and TV interviews promoting the need to reform health care.

As a Senate health committee passed a different version of a health-care reform bill - a milestone for the issue - Obama said on NBC, "The American people have to realize that there's no such thing as a free lunch."

And in a Rose Garden speech, he said the "status quo" on health care is "threatening the financial stability of families, of businesses, and of government. It's unsustainable, and it has to change."

Asked if Obama supports the surtax on wealthiest Americans even though it would break a campaign pledge, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said only, "It's a process that we're watching."

Republicans in Washington and small-business defenders in New York said the House legislation would effectively place a stranglehold on businesses while running off top earners.

"Placing a big tax burden on the small-business community would rob them of the resources they need to create the jobs that will lead us out of the recession," said Tom Donohue, president of the US Chamber of Commerce.

"If there's one sure way to kill the goose that lays the golden egg, this is it."
Richard Lipsky, a lobbyist for small stores and businesses in New York City, warned that "in the middle of a recession, it's a very strange way to legislate."

"According to what we've read, the House health-insurance plan would have a job-crippling impact on neighborhood stores and other small businesses because they put mandates on these businesses that would prevent them from hiring people because of the cost of the plan," Lipsky said.

Under the House plan, businesses with payrolls of $400,000 or more would pay an 8 percent penalty for uninsured workers, while companies with payrolls between $250,000 and $400,000 would pay slightly smaller penalties.

Adding to this burden, said Michael Moran of the State Business Council of New York, is that New York is already a high-tax state.

"Any additional taxes make New York even less competitive," he said.
New York would become the third-most-hostile place for top earners to live under the proposed new surtaxes supported by House Democrats and championed by Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY).

Also hit would be individuals earning $280,000 annually and families making $350,000 a year.

The profits from small businesses would also be taxed on the back end.
Kathryn Wylde, president of the Partnership for New York City, an umbrella organization representing the city's major businesses, said that the estimated top marginal tax rate of 57 percent for New York actually underestimates the potential impact on businesses.

That's because it doesn't include the city's burdensome unincorporated-business tax, which snares many entrepreneurs.

"It could be between 62 and 63 percent," she said.

If the House plan passes, Wylde said, "There literally, at this point, is very strong reason to relocate your family and your business outside New York."

A lot of small businesses would be hit with the penalties for not insuring workers and get hit with the surtaxes, Moran warned.

"Many small businesses file their business taxes under personal income," he said. "That's the way the tax law is written. Small business, which is really where most of the job creation takes place, could be hit hard.

According to the city's Department for Small Business Services, there are some 220,000 small businesses in the five boroughs. The agency does not keep track of how many offer health insurance.

"It's something that's going to kill jobs. That's the result," said Stephanie Cathcart, spokeswoman for the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

Among the most egregious provisions of the House proposal, she said, is a requirement that businesses pay the cost of 72.4 percent of individual health plans and 65 percent of family plans.

Those that don't hit the mark would face the payroll tax penalty.

Being veterans we understand that one of the most important of military courtesies is the salute. It is a respectful greeting and a sign of recognition between military persons. Unfortunately, Barack Hussein Obama does not know how to salute. Failing to properly perform the salute is an embarrassment and disrespectful to everyone who is serving or has served in the United States Armed Forces.

Regulations governing the salute are founded on military custom deeply rooted in tradition. The salute is a symbol of respect and a sign of comradeship among service personnel. In form, the salute is simple and dignified, but there is great significance in that gesture. It is a time-honored demonstration of courtesy among all military personnel, and it expresses mutual respect and pride in the service which Obama has none.
We are going to give Barack Hussein Obama a lesson on how to salute
Barack, you need to ALWAYS make your salute smart and snappy. Your continuous half-hearted, sloppy salute gives you away as a raw recruit and shows a lack of respect for the Armed Forces of the great nation. Your affinity for the half-hearted handshake is ok on the campaign trail but the same principle should not be applied to the salute.

To salute, raise your right hand (not your left) smartly until the tip of your forefinger (index finger) touches your headgear and or above and slightly to the right of your right eye. Keep your thumb and fingers extended and joined, palm to the left, with your hand and wrist straight. Hold your upper arm horizontal, and your forearm inclined at an angle of 45º. At the same time turn your head and eyes toward the person or flag you are saluting. Hold the salute until returned by the person, saluted, and then drop your hand smartly to your side without smacking the side of your leg like a communist.

This is the regulation salute. Learn how to do it properly. Practice in front of a mirror. Don't give your salute any extra flourishes; that is simply bad taste.

Barack Obama at the all-star game. Last night Barack Obama threw out the first pitch at the all-star game. He walked out onto the mound and lobbed the ball over the plate. When he was done he went into the stands had a couple of hot dogs and a couple of beers. In the 2nd inning he went into the commentators booth and talked to Joe Buck about how great his life is. Are you freaking kidding me?!

Did I miss something? Was there a memo that went out that said the econmy had turned around? That un-employment was on it's way down? Was there a memo that said Iran and North Korea are no longer developing nuclear weapons? Of course not! There was no memo!

Would somebody tell Barack Obama, he's the President of the United States. That's not a 40 hour a week job! 7 days a week, 24 hours a day this guy should be up at the freaking White House thinking of ways to make this country a better place!

Nobody asked him to run for President. Nobody walked into Barack Obama's room late at night, grabbed him by the ears and told him he was going to run for president. He decided! He begged people to freaking vote for him. I love these senators, congressman , mayors and presidents; they beg people to vote for them and then when they get elected they act like they are doing us a freaking favor by just being in office.

Ricky Alardo, a homeless alcoholic nicknamed Ricky Ricardo, swigs cheap vodka by day at his favorite corner in Washington Heights, then calls an ambulance to chauffeur him to the hospital for a free meal and a warm place to sleep, courtesy of taxpayers who fund his Medicaid benefits.

For a chronic caller like Alardo -- who phones 911 four or five times a week -- the annual medical bill can be as high as $300,000. Over 13 years, the length of time he has been abusing the emergency room, he has cost the medical system an estimated $3.9 million.

In Midtown, another bum, Robert, has faked emergencies to get food and shelter in ERs about 40 or 50 times in the past three years -- and taxpayers pick up his tab, too.

Ricky and Robert are among the dozens of "frequent fliers" who clog the 911 system, tie up city ambulances, crowd emergency rooms and burn through Medicaid money.

An ambulance ride alone can run as much as $800, and an ER visit can cost, conservatively, $400 a pop, according to estimates from medical experts.

City officials don't track frequent fliers or the costs associated with their transport and hospital care, but anecdotal numbers from ER and EMS workers suggest there are dozens throughout the city.

"We have a system that is extremely dysfunctional. We have no place to put these people," an EMS medic said.

A paramedic working downtown said some frequent fliers think they'll get faster treatment if they arrive at an ER by ambulance, rather than walk in.

"They know what to say to our call takers," he said.

Or they'll tell a bystander, "Oh, I have chest pains," the medic said.
Alardo, 53, phones 911 so regularly, medics know which calls are likely his.

"When Ricky passes on, I'll probably even go to his funeral," said one medic who works in Washington Heights. "I've seen him almost every day for the last 13 years."

An inebriated Alardo lauded the medics last week, saying they "treat me like a king."

A few hours later, he called for an ambulance to pick him up on Bennett Avenue. He went into the hospital at about 4 p.m. and slept for hours.

His fellow frequent flier Robert said he has called 911 as many as 50 times since becoming homeless three years ago.

He said he would tell the 911 operator he had chest pains or was suicidal.
But, he confessed last week, "I'm not really suicidal."

Robert, 40, said he was looking for a place to sleep, get a meal and get the medications he takes for depression.

He said he stopped his 911 habit after an ambulance driver "chewed him out."
"I haven't called an ambulance for about a month," Robert said.

By law, EMS workers cannot refuse to treat or transport any patient. And ERs have to at least evaluate and stabilize homeless patients.

The drain on the city's strapped medical system is huge. Medicaid reimbursements don't come close to covering the costs of frequent-flier visits.

Medicaid pays just $175 for a basic ER visit and only $186 for the cost of an $800 advanced-care ambulance.

At a minimum, ERs give vitamins, showers, hot food and a bed to their homeless patients. But those who come in with underlying medical conditions require X-rays, cardiograms and medicines that can push the cost of an ER visit well above the average $400.

"They take space. They take nursing resources. They're a drain on the staff's energy level and emotions," said Dr. Jeffrey Brenner, of Camden, NJ, who has studied the issue. "They're costing the system in both direct and hidden ways."

Brenner's research found Medicaid paid $46 million for the top 1 percent of Camden's frequent fliers, or 1,035 patients, during a five-year period.

A pilot program at Bellevue Hospital has cut ER visits by 67 percent among "high-cost" Medicaid patients by finding them their own doctors, housing and even cellphones to keep in touch with their doctors, according to a recent report by the United Hospital Fund.

But it will be hard to break the habit of vagrants who view the ER as their personal retreat.
"It's not always easy to pick up these guys and take them in," one medic said. "But our policy is: '

You call, we haul.' We have no other choice."

When Eric Ulrich was elected in the special election to replace Joseph Addobbo we told everyone who would listen that this young man was not the right choice. Granted the field was weak and there was not much of a choice but nevertheless he was never and is still incapable of representing the district.

At the tender age of 23, we felt young Eric was too inexperienced, too hot headed and frankly not up to the task. After all, this is his first job right out of college! Imagine giving A 23 YEAR OLD KID a $122,000 A YEAR JOB WITHOUT ANY EXPERIENCE! What’s next making someone a Pilot without training? I would never get on a plane with that Pilot! Would you?

Well it seems that we were right. As the Patriots continue to examine the NYC budget we see that young Eric, in an attempt to placate his supporters and play politics with taxpayer money has decimated a fine organizations budget – The Queens Symphony Orchestra and instead has padded the pork to his political allies.

Are we shocked? No! Are we concerned? Yes. The JPP is in the midst of detailing all of the changes Councilman Ulrich has made to the budget and how he is using the budget and taxpayer money for a Political Quid Pro Quo.

So this summer, we all will may miss a few concerts, we will wonder if the Queens Symphony will have enough cash to make it, but we will most certainly go line by line through the NYC budget and report to you how Eric Ulrich is using your taxpayer funds to get elected. So far, in our initial estimation approximately $300,000 has been identified and is questionable.

In addition to continually apologizing for our strength, resolve and ability to protect ourselves over the last century, he is now making ridiculous promises to our enemies. The LAST thing we should do is shelve our missile defense system, especially while North Korea and Iran continue their nuclear weapons program.

President Obama Retreats on Third-Site Missile Defenses

On his first presidential visit to Moscow this week, Barack Obama continued to cast doubt on U.S. plans to deploy elements of its missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.[1] Since taking office, President Obama has conditioned his support for the "third site" deployment of 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic on a number of factors--its workability, its cost-effectiveness, and the provability of an Iranian nuclear threat. On a visit to Prague in April, President Obama gave a keynote speech focusing on total nuclear disarmament whereby missile defenses would be completely unnecessary.[2]

Following revelations in April that President Obama "secretly" offered Moscow a grand bargain whereby it would sacrifice the third site in exchange for Moscow's help discouraging Iran's nuclear program, President Obama has seemingly gone out of his way to back away from the missile defense deal, which was concluded with Prague and Warsaw in the final months of the Bush Administration.[3] This week's Obama-Medvedev summit has reinforced the message that the third site remains a bargaining chip that can be played at the President's will in exchange for achieving his higher profile political agenda items such as strategic arms reductions.
Constitutionally mandated to ratify or reject treaties, the U.S. Senate should make clear to President Obama that it will not sacrifice missile defense in exchange for a new treaty with Russia reducing strategic nuclear weapons.[4]

Will He or Won't He?
President Obama's commitment to negotiating a new strategic arms treaty with Russia before the expiration of the current START treaty this December has topped his political agenda. Although missile defense has not yet been officially incorporated into the negotiations for the new treaty, Russia has made it quite clear that the issues are interlinked and that it will not separate these agenda items.[5]
President Medvedev stated that the new treaty must be linked specifically with Moscow's objections to the third-site deployments.[6] President Obama has offered to "discuss" both offensive and defensive weapons systems in the context of the new treaty.[7]

By investing so much political capital in a new treaty and fudging uncomfortable issues such as missile defense, President Obama risks having to sacrifice this vital aspect of U.S. national security in order to advance the negotiations. Further, he has repeatedly sent the message that the third-site deployment is not important to him.[8]

At best, President Obama has been deliberately vague with regard to the third site; at worst, he is simply looking for a way out, while keen to avoid the accusation that he has caved in to Russian pressure. However, it has become increasingly obvious that the third-site deployment is a red-line issue for Moscow and that President Obama will have to choose between abandoning its Central and Eastern European allies and U.S. national security interests and appeasing Russian aggression on this issue.

The Third Site Is Workable and Cost-Effective
President Obama and his Administration, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, have repeatedly hinged the Administration's support for deployment of U.S. missile defenses in Poland and the Czech Republic on the proven workability of the ground-based system. This caveat, however, has already been satisfied--missile defense technology already works.

In a December 2008 test, the Missile Defense Agency performed a successful interception and destruction of an incoming ballistic missile. In September 2007, the U.S. missile defense system destroyed the mock warhead of a long-range missile. Since 2001, 37 of 46 "hit-to-kill" missile defense tests have been successful.[9] As General Trey Obering, former director of the Missile Defense Agency, states in The Heritage Foundation's 33 Minutes documentary, "Our testing has shown not only can we hit a bullet with a bullet; we can hit a spot on a bullet with a bullet."[10]

Alternatives to the third site include the deployment of sea-based or mobile theater-based missile defense systems. However, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has stated that these alternatives do not provide a level of defense comparable to that of the third site.

The CBO states: "None of the alternatives considered by CBO provide as much additional defense of the United States."[11] The report also found that the estimated $9-14 billion 20-year cost of the third site was half of the estimated costs of a ship-based alternative.[12]

The Third Site Is Urgently Needed
The negative implications for the security of the United States, its forward-deployed troops, and its allies in Europe should not be underestimated in the event that the third site is abandoned.

The violence meted out to its own people in the wake of rigged elections illustrates the repressive and belligerent nature of the Iranian regime, which has continued developing its nuclear and missile programs regardless of international pressure. On May 20, Iran successfully test-fired the Sajjil 2 solid-fuel missile, which has a 1,200-1,500 mile range, putting Israel within Tehran's reach.[13] Israel's Space Research Center also reports that Iran intends to accelerate its production of even longer-range ballistic missiles and their delivery systems in the near future.[14]

And in April, the National Air and Space Intelligence Center stated that Iran could develop a missile capable of reaching the United States as early as 2015.[15]
President Obama is determined to negotiate with Iran--a strategy that is so far failing--and work closely with Moscow in seeking to persuade Tehran away from its nuclear and missile proliferation programs. However, it would be dangerous not to employ other strategies simultaneously, including missile defenses, stronger sanctions, and preparations for the potential use of force against Iran's nuclear facilities. Ultimately, Moscow may not work with Washington to disarm Iran and may even work against American interests.[16] It is important, therefore, that President Obama has alternate options.

Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen has described Iran's pursuit of a nuclear bomb as a ticking clock--and time is not on President Obama's side.[17] The CBO report states that alternate options to the third site may not be available as early as its estimated 2013 timeframe.[18]

Considering the time necessary to complete ratification of the treaties in Poland and the Czech Republic, appropriate the funds necessary for its construction from Congress, and physically construct the installations, the Obama Administration must press forward with the deployment of the third site sooner rather than later.

The Third Site: Critical to U.S. National Security
Departing Moscow with a tentative agreement on strategic arms control that will severely limit America's delivery systems as well as its strategic stockpiles, Obama has given away far more than he gained.[19] He cannot afford to give away missile defense too.

The deployment of U.S. missile defenses in Europe has become a critical matter for Moscow, which is determined to have a sphere of privileged interest in its near-abroad. Since Russia's invasion of Georgia in August 2008 and its subsequent annexation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Moscow has yet to face any serious consequences for its actions. For the sake of U.S. national security and to prevent another dangerous geopolitical setback in Russia's neighborhood, President Obama must make it clear that he supports the deployment of missile defenses to Poland and the Czech Republic and seek full funding of these sites from Congress.

At least one recent poll has shown that nearly two-thirds of the American public feels that there has been too much coverage of the King of Pop's death.

For those tens of millions of Americans, they likely believe that Representative King is giving voice to their own feelings on the media's excessive, fawning coverage of the singer's passing.

It appears as though there is a growing backlash building towards the media and Hollywood glorification of celebrity and hero worship, particularly when the networks are attempting to force-feed a public the importance of a figure as troubled and outlandish as Jackson sadly became later in his life.
